Several things lead to my disappearance from the PC Message Boards. I think I’ve spoken about it before so I wont reiterate much here, but a lot of it had to do with burnout. I spent a ton of time on V15 only to have it knocked over new starting effects. Competitive balanace began to dominate conversation and that bored the shit out of me. Then the MPC happened and I didn’t go very far, followed by the shit with Dinelle and I had just had enough.
Between the MPC and Y4 Regional I only picked up cards once, for a local, and played mystril and an eh version of farming with Luke’s skyhopper.
Going into the Y4 regional, steve and Justin spent a weekend testing but I was in NYC visiting a friend and couldn’t play. H2o came in the wednesday before we left to get some games and hang out and despite my despondence from the game, I played really well. I was intuitive and instinctive and most of my game plans just worked. My normally less than stellar deckbuilds were running fine and I was feeling really good about a lot of my card choices.
I decided on huntdown for dark pretty early despite messing around with tanks some. I think tanks are super strong and we had some really neato ideas about different ways to run them but we always came back to the same problem: activation. Tanks just suck ass at activating unless you do IAO/Mob Points start, and then you can’t start droid racks AND combat response and that’s just janky.
I had no confidence in huntdown beating light senate even though justin thought it was fine (as evidence, Justin demolished the guy at the y4 regional playing light senate who also demoilshed me with the same deck). And I was even worried about Huntdown beating profit (though I luckily avoided having to play it all day).
Funny/embarassing story: we’re driving down to the great state of maryland and come up with the ROC combo to beat senate and profit and think it’s the bomb. I labored over the decision to play the combo over a more solid version of HD all night and into the morning and decided on playing it. Until we got to the tournament, cut out location location location and read that it doesn’t let you deploy warrooms. We is retarded.
For light I knew I was going to run WYS though not the spies version I had been playing. It’s a list Tom Hollingsworth gave us and I tweaked some. It starts Wokling, Squadass and We Didn’t hit it, which lets you activate +1 at systems you control; it’s not that huge of a card, but it’s pretty good. I’m not completely sold that it’s better than I must be allowed to speak V with a farm, or even without the farm, but oh well.
One note to Tom: Thanks for convincing us that Old ben is a good card, but you almost ass-fucked me by telling justin it let you survive force lightning, choke and other removed from battle tactics. It doesnt. It only works on forfeited dudes. I would’ve tripped you down some stairs if I had gone for a beatdown on the gemmeperor and been assfucked by that card.
The trip down was pretty uneventful save the revelation of tech and tech yet to come, that I choose not to discuss. We got into the hotel around 330am due to justin getting stuck in major traffic coming out of boston in the pouring rain.
I will say this about the brand new La Quinta hotel in edgweood MD, it’s fucking sick. It just opened, we got our room for 80 a night with the AAA discount (regular 89 per night). It had two double beds, a pull out couch, a big fridge, microwave, flat screen AND complimentary breakfast. Fucking bomb. The KTOD has had a longstanding tradition of staying at courtyard marriotts, originally due to the fact that I worked for them and got sick discounts and then of the dope pool area. The only thing this hotel is missing is a pool/hot tub combo, which the courtyard has on lockdown– this situation is akin to Chic-Fil-A vs. every other chicken chain. Chic Fil A would take everyone down if it were simply open on sundays and offered free refills. Bastards.
After the Location V debacle and getting our dark decks straightened out we decided to run Wipe them out all of them V for profit hate and imperial justice for profit/senate hate. Me Justin and Steve all ran the same list, card for card. For light I ran wys, justin ran profit though I think he only ran 2 warrooms, and steve ran hidden base. Andy ran Mystril and Profit, though he and Justin played different lists.
Game 1, my WYS vs. Mighty Joe Young’s Hunt Down Duelling
I didn’t even realize that Joe started Epic Duel, but when I did I was glad he had 4-10 cards in his deck that could do nothing to me whatsoever. The only thing I worried about was Lord Vader coming down.
Early on I went to Tatooine system with luke and drew for my atst and admirals orders. He came down with Lord Vader to the cantina and I was pissed, but on second look it was Lord Vader V, so I paid 3 grabbed Fury and that was about game. I could never find Trans Term (all day in fact) but I was able to get luke into the atst with considerable backup, retreived a bunch with him and Edge, while draining at kessel with Dash and eventually tatooine. I don’t remember much happening in this first game except drains and retrieval and I took it pretty easily by 24.
Game 2, my HD vs. Chris Westergard’s WYS
He started I must be allowed to speak and I started first strike, Establish Control and I can’t remember what. Maybe no escape, I don’t think it was abililty V though I like that card because of all the battling you do. I had Vader turn 1 and went down to the docking bay to get some extra activation going, then backed him up with emperor pretty soon then drew up for space and emperor’s power. he went to space with just dash on his second turn and I came down with Zuckuss and 4lom and lit him up on my fourth after he gave me kessel and I could draw up for space. He didn’t save a force to be able to play moving into attack position and with two destinies I took dash out easy. He came down to fight zuckuss later with Booster and Melas but didnt play MIAP because he thought it didnt work without a correllian there. My destiny ended up taking them out and I think he drew a 2 making me only lose 4-lom. Him taking visage damage all game, the drain at the dbay and space and emperor’s power was pretty devastating and I ended up winning by 29.
4 (+53)
So now I’m sitting in first and have to face my nemesis Brad Eier.
Now Brad has had my number since the MPC two years ago when I got bored, lost focus against his rops and let my obi wan get beat down by 29 force late in the game that I wouldve clearly won, yet lost by 9 when he reacted with a bunch of walkers from 7 sites. Keep that in mind.
My WYS vs. Brad Eier’s Imperial Entanglements
Justin had just seen this deck so he told me that it plays tons of deserts and tatooine sites and drops guys at each to drain and ping. This is kind of bad for wys because it doesnt play a lot of guys and only 2 of those guys draw destiny on their own, which when you think about it, is pretty bad.
I went to kessel early and started retreiving with luke. then I went down with a stacked chewie’s atst to a drain of 2 site for me and then melas to the cantina. He dropped tons of guys on the devastator and shuttle them down to drain/ping. I moved to block his drains as best I could and drew up for an admirals order every turn (i run 4) to get his commander ping AO off the table. He let me have the kessel/cantina drains for a long time and I refused to fight him for fear of reacting, though after the game i realized that he really had no power. This was driven home when against justin in the finals brad dropped like 6 guys and 2 walkesr against a lone chewie and was only 15 power.
I got weapon’s display out and that only added to my retrieval, I even got a nice edge off. The big problem here was mirax. I couldn’t find her, and I couldnt get her with the pulsar skate because I decided to try out booster. If i had been able to loop my we’re doomed for the last three turns of the game, or even it could be worse, I think I win no problem, but no mirax = no win for me and I lost by 8.
4(+45)
Game 4, my HD vs. Charles Clarkson’s LS Senate
First thing first, I flipped over my first card to put on imperial justice: Endor:backdoor. That spelled about game over for me and thusly, it came to pass. for the first five or so turns I just drew up with nowhere to go and waitedf or him to play senators. He waited until he dropped 3 and I went down with Vader to get the back door off justice. I eventually dropped Vader to the back door with some backup but he came down with Epps about 7 turns in a row and beat down whoever I put there. Late game I tried to get anything going by putting zuckuss at the system but it didnt matter. Without being able to get to teh back door and set up early while he had to pay for his expensive senators, I was pretty fucked and was damn lucky to only have lost by 16 forces.
4(+29)
I’m pretty bummed out now. I just have shit luck. That happened. Twice this day I went for fondor with establish control and it was activated. Twice I went for kessel for my free search this day and it was activated. I just have shit luck. I need to win my last 2 to have a shot at the final four so I get back to work.
Game 5, my HD vs. Wojchek Jankowski’s HBX
Justin played this guy earlier in the day and won when he luckily probed this guy’s hidden base on the last turn. If justin hadn’t probed, he would’ve lost… to a guy who got a free first round bye because he didnt come with decks put together… to a guy who was just starting to fill out his decklist when I sat down across from him in game 5…
from a guy who put out the three effects he would start with HFTMF before I put mine out… one of which was Your Inishgt Serves you well. Somehow the guy was shocked when I started no escape.
Justin was shocked I won this game so handily but I went to the back door with vader turn 1, emperor and janus turn 2 and emperor’s power soon after. he never cancelled visage. He could never cancel my drain on account of bane malar. I probed him on the second try and he had to lose 7. I battled him three or four times in space retreiving 2 every time (with ability V and first strike) and he only ever drained me with dinky 1 drains at systems. He never came to fight me and I simply didnt draw once I had my shit set up and I won by 20.
6 (+49)
At this point my diff is actually pretty good considering I had two losses. I felt pretty confident that a win would get me in, especially a good sized win. I faced Charles, the guy who beat me earlier.
Game 6, my WYS vs. Charles Clarkson’s HD
So this guy looked like he was playing justin’s decks from the MPC nearly card for card, but definitely in concept. He started conduct for blast door when I had a barrier earliy and that worried me a little. I tried to go to space with dash early but he was missing and I had to pull rayc, and back him up with Talon. Even though if zuckuss came down i wouldnt’ draw destiny, even if he had 4lom, with those two guys he’s not going to hurt me two bad because the forfeit is so huge.
He went to the cantina with DVDLOTS and Emperor and I dropped a fury on him, which he was ready for by starting decree V. I set up luke in space at tatooine while i got my atst stuff ready, backed him up with han in falcon and eventually landed them to put them in the atst. I couldn’t find combine fleet action to protect them vs. i have you now (he started crush) but I also couldn’t find a trans term so I had to press on fast and let visage take us both out. He tried pretty hard to get me at the docking bay with sidous, maul and others but I was always able to keep luke out and retor han, while draining at kessel.
Eventually I got the docking bay on lockdown and he came down with zuckuss and only drew enough to kill one guy on the outrider who I retorted. After I was able to get enough shit going in my hand, I was able to get the falcon back up to space, and through shipdocking, get dash on the outrider and fan out. Zuckuss was no match and eventually died. I wore him down with drains and retreival whereas he only had the cantina drain which was handled by it could be worse and control most of the time. He could’ve limited me at the end of the game, but he knew his diff was too low to get past me and spared me not getting in on his own accord, which was cool of him. I ended up winning by 15.
So that gets me in in fourth which works out since justin was second and we wouldn’t have to play in the finals. I got a tat pack, a theed palace pack a premiere pack and an Se pack. I pulled an after her and some junk.
So I face top seed brad eier in the finals and it’s about the worst i’ve ever played.
Entirely meaningful bonus game #1
Brad decided to play light first and It was a pretty chesmatchish game. I went down to the backdoor with vader super early followed by emperor bane and eventually janus. He altered my emperor’s power pretty early which was huge. But not as huge as me dropping maul and much anger in front of lando and forgetting that cloak was in the move phase. I glanced down at the card and saw ‘end of turn’ and just decided to be an absolute bonehead. He simply battled with lando and i drew destiny because I didn’t have another maul and got effed. Stupid me.
Image at the audience chamber was huge and kept me in the game. I was able to get some big drains in but late had to block his drains in space. His decision not to flip til late was a good one as he just plinked me with small drains. at one point I decided to move zuckuss in front of luke due to his small hand and hoped he didnt have anything. He did and I had to lose zuckuss and 9 which was unfortunate.
Preface: There needs to be an “I really have to poop” mood.
I ended up losing the game by 2 which would’ve been a win had i not forgotten how to cloak maul and even maybe if i didnt let zuckuss get beat down so easily.
Entirely meaningful bonus game #2
I’m already a little shook because of my shit play in the first game, but when my hand of 7 red cards and an xwing cannon revealed itself in the second game, and then proceded to draw up. I was able to get dash to kessel early but after thatn I could only get both hans, none of my tunnel visions and at it’s worst I had 20 red cards in my hand and two characters, both han. Eventually I got a tunnel vision and I ripped it twice for a chewie and an atst, but i was so on tilt at this point i put them at the judland wastes and instead of drawing 4 destiny i got zero. that pretty much cemented the game right there. Though I never got luke out, never got to retreive anything, I only lost by 6. I also played horrible, especially the turn I battled when I tried to play a second interrupt from lost pile, when i played two controls though control was grabbed.
After I drew 11 cards in a row, 10 red and 1 han (who i already had in hand) i was about done mentally and couldn’t hang on. The only solace I can take is that it was only an extra 50 bucks to add to the pool, though it resulted in us getting home about 2 hours later.
Yeah that’s about it. That took a while and I don’t feel like writing anymore, maybe i’ll post up other thoughts later.
There has been some ballyhoo over the KTOD profit deck that Steve ran at the MPC and I ran at PA States. So I’m going to break it down for everyone since that’s what I like to do with this blog but haven’t been able to do for some time what with a lack of events and new decks ran by the KTOD and more specificalyl me.
Since I actually had a pretty large hand in building this deck I have some good insigh into how everything came about and thusly changed over the course of the last few months when Steve decided to Lock In to it and play the profit at worlds.
It was over the summer. I wasn’t working (mostly by choice) and steve, justin and I made frequent trips down cape cod to chill at the beach and my parent’s cape house to play some cards and catan and all in all , relax. One night it was just steve and I heading down to the cape and it’s like an hour and a half drive so we got to talking.
We were thinking of new light decks. I had been running Hyperdrive with Don’t Forget the Droids V and we began to really sense that this card is certainly more powerful than it is goofy and surely there is another, better platform to run that strategy off of. A platform that doesn’t start with a three card hand and doesn’t struggle to put guys on the table. Both of us had, within the past week, been thinking about profit and the ideas came flooding out of us on the drive.
Seeking pulls 3po and r2 cheap for DFTDV. It also pulls good cheap guys. We could play destiny adders, two of each and depending on which adder was in your hand, you could pull that guy with seeking. Rebel leadership V with Obi Wan V8 is amazing, between that and DFTDV we should win every battle. Han’s blaster is br0ken! – were just some of the things we exclaimed while steve dug through boxes while we drove down to the cape. Of course, with 3 boxes of cards open and a ton of cards in his lap, we get pulled over by a cop because I had an expired registration on my license plate.
So the cop comes up to the window and is like “are those star wars cards?” And we were like uhhh, yeah. “I have a friend that collects those he makes a ton of money off them.” I had the correct sticker in my car I had just failed to put it on the plate, so the cop let us go and we were back to the wide world of profit.
We tried some different things in the original build and tweaked some things after each game. Tanks was very big in our area when we built this and we wanted things to help vs. that. A gift seemed awesome because of the -1 drain as much as the undercover spyness. We originally only liked one V8 obi wan until we saw the true power of Rebel Leadership V. We also quickly discovered that Han’s Blaster was kinda shitty and scrapped that pretty quick.
Here’s the original list that I played at the State Championship in Philadelphia, the first event that the deck was played in (and it ran up aganist tanks twice, which is pretty much why I shelved it following the event). Anyway, here’s the list with some more explanation/breakdown/cardchoices after.

Destiny in the deck isn’t bad but there are a lot of 1′s. Brian Fred turned me on to Jedi Lev V so I threw that in and really like it. Plus it’s another way to get han/anybody back when you’ve already blown seeking. Nabrun was a given. Entrenchment was there for Agents/alien protection, taking advantage of blaster proficiency V, luke’s game text, etc. Padme was in there for more damage, projections were in there to limit damage off planet (again mostly for tanks off endor).
One of the main drawbacks of the deck is that there are only seven different characters to go battle with. So you really have to have a good balance of protecting han, going and fighting, or spreading out. Resliance and Jedi Lev and Seeking V certainly help though.
Once tanks faltered at worlds, we started looking at this deck once again. We realized teh Rug hugs weren’t that good and lowered the destiny, so we put another Gift in. The gift was especially good when they made the new Yoda V who is absolutely a bomb in this deck and he went in for the quigons and we made room for one more saber, which, with it’s four destiny is rpetty damn good.
Something that really screwed me against tanks was their ability to start Arica. If you couldn’t find your blaster proficiency or if you could and they cancelled it with Cease Fire, they eliminated a drain of 2-3 for most if not all of the game, so A Padme had to come out for a corran horn, who also helped you set up a beatdown if arica was stranded there and couldn’t get off planet.
I hadn’t ever looked at steve’s list til just this moment but the changes are actually extremely slight from his list and mine. I’m looking at his day 1 deck for the MPC. I know the day 2 deck had some differences because of meta calls going into a final confrontation style matchup, but I’ll note the changes and make the final list.
He put in scrambled transmission V for the Escape pod and put in A second Gift of the Mentor and a second I Don’t need their scum either V for the two rug hugs.
The most major/subtle change to the deck happened the morning of the MPC. We’d been running an Unusual amount of Fear because of all the pulls this deck uses at the start of the game. But While I was in the shower, I decided to tell steve that I was running a tatooine system in my senate and that he should play Planetary Defenses or else he would auto lose to me. Since he really couldnt fit all the shields under Fear he decided to go with Drop, which really worked a lot better for the deck, you just have to be a little more economical with your pulls early on but all in all he said it was a great improvement.
The most profound impact was cleary yoda V. cheap immunity main with a dope weapon of destiny 4 and a dope gametext. this guy was a huge addition and what made this deck shoot up to tier 1 for sure. To clear up a spot for this, he took out the 2 qui gons and the we’re doomed for 2 yoda’s and his saber.
so the MPC list looked like this:
Profit/Destroyed

So the game plan is to drop a quick beatdown against their aliens if they put them down. In testing when Agents starts lando/random alien, and drops emperor first turn you’re still able to get off a beat down with a free luke and whoever, bounce an alien, hopefully blaster proficiency or clash someone, and clear the audience chamber. If you’ve got destiny adders the possibilities are endless. It’s tough to not be able to clear this out, you really need to not get a luke to do this since the whole deck revolves around him, but it’s not that hard to do massive overflow especially if you can get a DFTD V off too.
Tanks is still a tough matchup for the deck because it does so much damage. You’ll usually have to go fight them off a site. Rebel leadership V works almost as good as DFTD and Anakin’s saber can deflect blasts from the tank cannons as well. You’ll wanna go in there with destiny adders, but they can’t have the assault leader at both sites so go where he isn’t. You just have to watch out for outflanked or have yoda ready if they play it.
Most matchups play the same, you try and maximize your drains and control both tatooine sites and get the ping going. If you end up in a battle, chances are you can end the game right there. I only had problems fighting A DS deck similar to the profit, with massive character elimination in Drew Scott’s BHBM that can capture luke, you are beaten and dark strike guys. He was able to overflow me for a decent amount twice and I still ended up winning the game by a narrow margin.
Steve really doesn’t like entrenchment and rarely uses it, not wanting to pay three to get it and also citing that people rarely come and fight him at the audience chamber. I know on day 2 he ran an escape pod and a grimtash. The grimtash is mainly a joke b/c chu knows we never, ever play that card so he will often draw up against us to get what he needs and it was a good meta call though I don’t know I’d throw it in there. I like we’re doomed. I think it’s too good in close matchups i/e fear and other damage races that can really really win you the game.
The deck is really solid. Another suggestion would bea third rebel leadership since you always throw the first one to getting a war room. Otherwise try it out. I think you’ll see the true power of don’t forget the droids and just having a droid at each site is pretty bomb. If you happen to get r2 at a scomp link his text is awesome AND he’s heroic, so even if you don’t have the DFTD they have to swing at r2d2.
So post up some commentary, let me know what you think what you’d change and if you play it especially.
gemmesizzle, bobby sapphire, out.
A few weeks ago, Team Ohio posted on one of the MPC threads that to train for worlds they bought a bunch of OTSDs and got back to the basics; basic combos, basic force draining, basic everything with the four packs of premiere, one A new Hope pack, and the fixed premium cards balancing out the bombs like it’s worse and elis/nabrun.
One of the favorite pasttimes of the KTOD is OTSD playing, often times throughout our vs. career and before, Justin and I picked up OTSD really cheap at cons or online and duked it out OTSD style. Truth be told, I beat him more often than not (I did pull vader AND tarkin once), but that would prove to be some noice training for our grudge match with Team Ohio.
After seeing Eier’s post, I shot him a PM about having a grudge match and maybe putting some money on the line. We didn’t end up putting cash up (hell, team ohio didn’t even pay me for the two otsd’s I bought them!!), but we did have stakes: The losers had to wear the winner’s clothes for a tournament round. This would be funny either way because either eier/booker who are larger than us would be wearing tight, tiny clothes, or justin and I would have huge t-shirts on that are a few sizes too big for us. Hilarity!
So I’m going to analyze my card pool and go through my deck progression, just for fun, and do a mini tournament report featuring one game against the bane of my star wars card existance: Brad Eier.
We ordered the OTSDs from Wholesalegaming.com, decipher’s main distributor, I found them cheap on that site. Cheaper than cat1, which also only sends you jabba boxes when you buy OTSDs from them. I really want a new boba fett, so I took a chance on wholesalegaming.com. We planned on doing this all saturday night, but we got REALLY bored on friday waiting for people to show up and run the EJP tournament, so we decided to open, sort and start deckbuilding friday night.
Justin and I sat at a table on one side of the room and TO sat across the room directly to our left and we busted our boxes. We all ripped Luke boxes, which actually look pretty mint. I used a luke box when I won origins in ’02 and had no luck with them since. I used Leia at worlds ’03 and top eighted, and boba fett in 07 when I hit the top 8 again. The real commodity here is box BOTTOMs which get wrecked pretty easily and two shiny new ones are dope.
Okay so here’s the original pool:

My card pool was pretty rough, I got really bad rares and one good character in Boshek. Dark is way stronger than light in space in this format, but I had nobody to hang on the ground, so I knew going into this that I was just going to try and lose by as little as possible and try to win some key battles.
I decided to use Kashyyyk as my starting local, knowing that if he didn’t have it I’d have a huge advantage, and if we starting local bounced, I had the war room as a solid backup. To round out the locals I used tatooine (for it’s a hit), kessel (for the drain) and corulag (for the 2 icons, -1 drain), the aforementioned war room, Judland wastes and Mos Eisley. I chose mos Eisley over the moisture farm because of the darkside moisture farm gametext, even though the farm has a scomp link for r2d2 AND How did we get into this mess.
My original idea was to use all the droids and forced services to handle big drains. 5 droids all with good destiny (except cz3 which just has noice game text), how did we get into this mess and forced services seemed liek a solid idea. R2D2 + Fire Extinguisher is just too good so that was obviously the first two cards I put in the deck. I also threw in the vaporator for the judland waste drain of 3 combo.
Because I went with mostly systems I decided to put in every ship I had, even those shitty Z-95s. Even though they have no hyperspeed, I figured with all the systems and 2 hyper escapes I could make the most of the other ships and use the z95s if I absolutely had to.
As for characters I had to play basically everything I had that was remotely decent. THe Rebel Trooper guard would’ve made the cut if he was a warrior, but I only wanted to play a few rebels because of Solo han. I threw the warrior’s courage in there even though I only had four warriors (two of which were the same unique card). Rebel Techs, the Jawa and Beru didn’t make it either.
I played zero effects. I had beggar in the original list but TJ convinced me that it just cost too much and there’s just no reason for anyone to save force in this format other than to drop a beatdown and the chances of it all working out are just too slim. Though when Eier dropped the Dark Jedi Lightsaber on Chilsden for 6 I REALLY wanted that beggar.
Interrupts were basic, Hyper escape x2 liek I said, barrier, it’s a hit, solo han, it could be worse, and old ben. The good stuff.
Then I started talking with TJ and showed him my list. we both decided that the droids part of the deck just sucked. c3po blows, those other droids are doing nothing for me, and I should jsut run r2 and cz3 with the fire extinguisher, that cleared up 4 more slots for me to throw in bith shuffle, the rebel pilot, another system in corulag and the second it’s a hit. Here’s the final list:
Kashyyyk (starting)
Corulag
Kessel
Tattooine
Tat: Mos Eisley
Tat: Judland Wastes
Y4: War room
R2D2
Jek
Boshek
CZ3
Corellian

Warrior’s courage
It’s a hit x2

TO decides to match me up with Brad because since the MPC last year brad has owned me. I had brad dead to rights, my combat vs. his rops when I got bored battled with Obi Wan and got beatdown for 20+ force. I ended up winning the next game vs. his dick hat but we tied and the tiebreaker was cards in lost pile and I lost. Eier also beat me at east nats and I’m 1-3 vs. him lifetime.
Eier starts Raltiir to my kashyyyk and first turn dropds lars moisture farm and prophetess and says go. I’ve got dick in my opening hand but I did rip R2 AND the fire extinguisher, so I draw up some cards and say go. He drains me and draws.
I drop r2 and the fire extinguisher and save force for boshek. He goes to kashyyyk and I drop a little beatsquad there and activate a force with R2 when he draws odd.
I end up dropping mos eisley and some dudes there and move r2 over to drain for 1 and move over to kessel to get some drains there. He ends up following me and some space battles ensue. It seems like he’s not getting a lot of space so I send an Xwing over to raltiir to even out the drain race while we battle at kessel. At one point I’m holding a barrier and he drops blast door controls to obsolete it. Boshek ends up owning space and never dies, and he is my beacon of light in this game. I’m still destined to lose but because of my raltiir drain I’ve really evened things up. I moved my guys over to the farm to block that drain of 2 and force him to battle the fire extinguisher which really slowed the game down for him. He ended up clearing off jek and evram lajerie and retrieving some force with prophetess, but the shistavven wolfman got some drains in at Mos Eisley and forced brad to move in front of him.
I end up relinquishing kessel and the drain of one for a drain at kashyyyk. At the end I had 3 cards left and not enough to do anything but i knew it could be worse was in there. I drew one card and it was the ICBW! so that saved me for a turn and I was able to drain for 2 more, only losing by 6. Justin beat booker by 21, so we had already won the ‘grudge match’ but I wanted to keep it close, especially after brad spent the first four turns draining for 2 at the farm, a giant chunk of my life force.

I’ve got a ton to say about the MPC and while I’ll crosspost this on decktech for archival purposes, this will be the uncensored draft because th user agreement when you become a premium member on this site is that you can have a completely uncensored blog.
I really want to start with the Dinelle stuff because it’s been boiling my blood all day. On the way to work this morning I actually had to engage in some deep breathing to calm myself down because I really thought I should’ve lost my cool on Sunday. I’m sort of glad I didn’t because I don’t know what everyone would have thought about me losing it like that, I don’t even think justin and steve have seen me absolutely lose my shit over something but I was ready to snap in my game against Dinelle and thinking about it was driving me nuts.
So I’ll get to all that. But if I’m going to do it chronologically (and I am) It’s going to start with where Steve and I created the profit that wrecked house this weekend by steve on days 1 and 2, and by chu on day 2.
My parents have a house down cape cod and it’s pretty fun to go to the beach and play cards all day at a beach house, grab some drinks at night and chill outside in the cool, summer air. One of these summer days Steve and I decided to go down and just get games and Justin was thinking about meeting us but wasn’t sure yet. On the way down steve and I were just shooting the shit about cards and I was like “I think profit could be good, I’ve been thinking about it a lot.” And he said he was just looking at profit shit and we could probably make a solid one. I wanted to use rebel leadership as an activation platform with don’t forget the droids since seeking pulled r2 and 3p0 and made them cheap. He wanted to use destiny adders like Rug Hug, Skywalkers and Gift of the Mentor and deploy with seeking the guy corresponding to the adders in your hand. So we went to work right there.
Steve was pulling cards out and had two long boxes open with cards in the door tray, the middle tray and all over his lap when we saw the blue lights flashing behind us. I didn’t think I was speeding but when decks are being built in the car I RARELY look at the road, let alone the spedomitor, so who knows. I pull over and obviously steve can’t just put away a ton of cards so the cop asks for my shit and then goes “are those starwars cards? My buddy collects those things and sells stuff like that on ebay for a ton of money.” Turns out my registration was expired or something stupid that I can’t even understand how the cop saw it and let us go.
We put that shit together and it ran pretty well. There were some incarnations of it and maybe I’ll do a blog entry about the progression in my normal style, but that day is not today. I played the deck at PA States and it went 2-1 losing to tanks by 1. It has some problems with tanks but there was no Yoda MOF V out then either which made this deck infinitely better.
So summer went by, into worlds, Profit was good but we were expecting a lot of tanks so I shelved the deck in favor of WYS Spies which doesn’t have any autolosses and doesn’t have too many auto wins (though combat is up there). I took this deck to the top 8 of worlds, switched to combat and got wtfpwned by tom hollingworth in the day 3 play but still earned a lot of money on the weekend splitting 1/2/5th with Chu and Justin.
Now going into the MPC I knew profit with Yoda was very strong, but one of the things we in the KTOD preach is the advantage being “locked into” a deck can bring you, and I was locked into WYS spies even though the diffs are reasonably low.
For dark the only thing that really worried me about playing senate was combat and we came up with sick tech for that, which was Jonus/Scimitar 2/proton bombs to bomb one of the Core sites and limit them to just one drain rather than 2, eliminates retreival, etc. So I thought that was a good choice. One thing I overlooked, which the KTOD overlooked against worlds and I forgot about, was savrip, and it ended up blowing me out.
Not alot to say about the rest of the preparation going into the MPC. However, the guys running the event did ask for an official KTOD ranking list to help determine what players should be ranked.
We had Baroni 6th. ’nuff said.
We dropped off our decklists and then went to Ihop on saturday morning. I had a huge breakfast and by the time we got to the event I had to take a monster dump. I HATE taking dumps in public bathrooms ESPECIALLY gamer store bathrooms. But I thought it had to be done, so I took off my coat, sweater and watch, brought my water with me and stood in the bathroom staring at the toilet seat saying “you can do this, you can do this” but in th end, I couldn’t and I decided to hold it in knowing that it would hurt really bad when I finally moved it. So the whole day I really had to shit and that didn’t help my playing at all.
I did work on some sweet tech for the wys spies and let me tell you about it.
Rendevous point came out for visored vision (so good, it’s better than a grabber).
Flash of insight V came out for corellian retort V, way better than found someone you have, how did I not play this before.
Theron Nett came out for Rayc Ryjerd V. same d/f (2/4) adds 3 to power though and a matching pilot for any of my ships and also not targettable by much anger in him.
Moving to attack position went in there for red 10, which means i’m only playing 4 ships but it hasn’t been a problem for the deck so far.
Yaeger beat shwartz in the first round and would face me. I didn’t know a lot about Shwartz but he beat me in the team tourney and that worried me a slight bit until Yaeger sat down across from me with Dark Senate.
Round 2, Game 1: My WYS Nightfall w/ Undercover vs. Yaeger’s Dark Senate
Yaeger started Combat Response, First strike and Crossfire but also started Naboo, which was his downfall. Normally against Senate I just draw up and wait for them to go to space and try and win the giant space battle. But with a second system being out, this meant that I could go elsewhere. He deployed saber 1 with a cannon, guri on the stinger and zuckuss to tatooine early. So I went out with Han in the falon to Naboo, and then dropped Dash in ship to Kessel and said go, not thinknig he had very much else to use. I was also holding retort V and moving into attack position and dropped capital support V that turn too. Next turn I backed han up with luke and melas with dash. There was some draining going on, I sabotaged his Saber cannon though I didn’t go to tatooine ever. He decided to come at me with Guri and zuckuss at naboo against luke and han limiting me to one destiny, so I played chasm and darkligthered the first and drew okay on the second. We pretty much went back and forth at naboo for a few turns and I eventually burned all his guys out because I got to play moving into attack position on two consecutive battles and got to place 3 shields out of play to make luke immune in two consecutive battles. Between that and some well timed retrieval kessel drains once he ran out of senators I ended up winning by 22.
Round 2, Game 1: My DS Senate vs. Yaeger’s Profit.
Now I had profit tech because I knew steve was playing it and that senate couldn’t be it the way we had been playing it. Simple fix, I put in the tatooine system, not for the proton bombs (because any profit player worth their salt is playing planetary defenses, though baroni wasn’t going to until that morning when I told him to play it because i put in the second system). So I start tatooine instead of naboo and turn 1 i have jonus in my hand and instead of going to the senate I decide to drop jonus and the bombs to tatooine turn one. Of course he had the shield but I did get excited for a second there.
I went to the senate next with lott dodd and some dudes. Stupid thing is, he gave me goo nee tay and I forgot my senators were immune and this was pretty pivotal. He drained me early on and I had to lose 2, I didn’t want him to know that I was never coming to fight him, so I lost begin landing your troops from hand and decided to lose one from the top, which should be fine as long as it wasn’t Ability Ability Ability. Of course it was.
He started scrambled and the game plan is to not play the political effects until he flips and retreives and also to retreive them immediately (only the add to drain and drain cancel). But since I thought my senators were deploy +2 I had to do it fast and get two more senators down. So he killed both effects and there were two senators between them with ability on the bottom and I only had 3 senators at the senate. So I deployed 2 more for +4 force total, but he forgot to play aim high and I was able to get both effects AND ability back. I made him lose 4 more to cancel both those ffects, got Maul to tatooine and baron to Naboo (can’t play the aliens in space against profit in case of A gift) and won that game handily with my double space drain, along with baskol ping.
So that was a clinic on how to beat and play senate in two consecutive games. I felt good going into my next round, playing against Kyle who was running fear and TRM. My gameplan vs. Fear is to get capital support V out as early as I can at all costs… of course things never go to plan.
Round 3, game 1: my WYS Spies w/ Undercover vs. Kyle Krueger’s Fear V.
Things started out pretty bleak for me as I went to deckdive multiple times looking for capital support V in my force pile, but it was always in my deck even though I had a control/tunnel vision early. First turn was just a lot of drawing and I think I went to the ground early and he came in with Sidious and crossfire and killed a couple guys. I lost the pulsar skate early somehow and that never saw the light of day, meaning that I was fighting with just three ships, two of which I had to keep together (luke and his xwing protecting han and the toolkit from overwhelmed) with dash handling the duties elsewhere. So no capital support V and no set for stun canceller either and I thought I was in trouble. I was blocking two drains, had the hyper escape for beatdowns and wasn’t doing much damage on my own either.
We had some serious battles with me losing some guys and retorting them and kyle losing some ICSD’s. Eventually I went after Chirnaenoo to stop the big drains but he was still hitting me at the death star docking bay (I was out of guys to go fight merrijk) as well as in space. He got off one overwhelmed on dash pretty early but I grabbed it, and then when I killed the other one with visored vision. Also when he was trying to track a 5 for a set for stun I killed that with visored vision too, which was pretty hot. So once the overwhelmeds were gone I was able to move han in front of icsd’s to start blocking drains along with luke and dash when I got him back. He would move away and I would drain where I could and he was draining where he could. Later on there were some more battles that caused him to lose ships when he left ships in front of my guys and by the end my three ships were just better than his and he kept having to move away from my attack squads while I would move to block his drains. I also got Legendary off when I redeployed dash and a smuggler and that really killed him.
One pivotal moment I thought might lose me the game was when I couldn’t save a force to move with sidious from the cantina to the docking bay and I forgot to break lando’s cover to make my drains free plus giving me a cantina drain. Just that turn of no damage I thought would lose me the game, but some well placed we’re doomed, it’s a hit and controls really tightened the game up, I got some retreival in and eventually took the game by 6. If i couldve found capital support v at all I think I win this game by a LOT more.
Round 3, game 2: my DS Senate vs. Kyle’s TRM
So Kyle sat down and said that he hoped not to see dark senate but I think that was a lie. The dude played 3 lando’s and maybe 3 tantives. Turn one he just saved. He started civil dis so I couldn’t do much early. He went lando in tantiv turn 2 to naboo. Finally I got two senators down, he stacked a six on colo and then came down with Obi Wan and blew out both my senators. I had begin landing your troops and dropped tikkes and another guy, he throws down leia and OOPs tikkes which was huge because that meant he didnt have to lose to ability all game, or baskol. I threw out tatooine with jonus while I was fighting the tantive with Maul in ship. He got Savrip out super early and I had nothing for that so this game was going to be pretty fruitless from the beginning but I triedt o even it out. He dropped Quigon on the tantiv and drew 3 destiny against maul and then moved over to jonus. I didn’t have anything in my reserve deck for combat response so I threw zuckuss down on saber one to fight and lost jonus. while clearing out some of his guys because I lost the fight but maximized attrition. he moved the empty tantive back to naboo and restocked it on a later turn while dropping the 3/2 site, but with scimitar 2 at tatooine i was pretty fucked not being able to bomb it even if i could get a drain off. The game felt a lot closer than it was but in the end not having the colo shield or masterful move combo in my deck killed me and i got wtfpwned by 24.
So I’m out but I know I made it tough on kyle and steve said he was so exhausted from having to play me that he played awful vs. steve, forgetting to drain with his fear once and forgetting to make steve take fear damage on two different turns! So I feel like I contributed to that.
I don’t know how much of a chance I would’ve had vs. steve but it wouldve been close. the two space drains wouldve made that game end in single digits in either direction and if i can get han/toolkit out turn 1 vs agents and survive a turn 2 zuckuss I know I can make that a single digit game as well. Unfortunately I never got that chance but I had a feeling steve would come out of the bracket and he did, and I was proud of him.
While they were all playing their last round I went across the street to the bar with TJ and Ray Bordier to drink yingling and stare at the bartender’s perfect tittyballs and watch the skins/’hawks playoff game. Eventually we made it back to the hotel with gross chinese food, a handle of vodka, settlers of catan and I FINALLY go to take my massive shit in the privacy of my hotel room.
Next morning we worked on steve and justin’s decks. They both asked me for advice on card slots to make me feel better about losing as much as for my expertise in fitting in a card or two and it worked out for me and them. I made sure justin played the masterful combat AND fit in an ellis which turned out to be instrumental in his championship win. Also, we got an escape pod and a quite a mercenary into the profit for steve. I put my TIES together with inconsequental losses 5 and added a third tie cannon and second lateral damage so it would have more beatdown potential, which really paid off game 1 when I beatdown luke in space for 14 overflow when I faced hidden base xwings which is pretty much the second worst matchup for my TIES.
I don’t really want to talk much about the consolation. I didn’t even want to stick around for most of it but I wanted to try and contribute cash for my team who so graciously paid me for being part of the team.
Short of it: I lost with my wys spies finaly again. I was dumb and didn’t put the toolkit out before he got the free executor effect, that really boned me. But what boned me more is that this guy just stackeda ll his pilots under the executor lengthwise, so you couldnt see who was on it as he was flying it around the galaxy. Apparently Lando was on there and when i tracked a 7 for edge, I said 6 and he popped my luke off the board, killing 6 retreival and regular luke retreival for the rest of the game. I ended up losing by like 9 or so trying to avoid that executor and veers f’d me on the ground, as did lando, when i used HFTMF to pop his immunity he used lando to pop it back down.
I lost to Mike Richards with my Ties in the 5th round when i was 3-1. He was playng wys panic which ties just can’t touch. A theyre capital ships and b. you just can’t even battle them or hold the ground, so that sucked.
I beat booker’s Combat racing propoganda deck and that was really fun. He got pwned by fury and we had a really cool interchange. I was draining for 3 without fear at the cantna (after her) and kessel. He dropped his fifth propoganda, teh first non v on a kessel drain, and I sad control. He said brief loss of control, i paid 10 and said it could be worse, he paid one and said it’s worse, and finally i said it’s a hit. I ended up winning by 12, I couldve edged for four more but no big.
Now I wanna talk about my game with dinelle and preface it a bit.
Dinelle plays wys nightfall but not with undercover, he actually tries to hold the ground. Justni and I agree that this is a pretty bad strategy vs. ds mains and justin handily defeated it the day before. However, in this game, Dinelle skipped the control phase by revealing dash for Get to your ships. Then he wanted to go back and drain but justin wouldn’t let him.
So immediately when we sit down Dinelle brings this up and says he hopes we don’t have a game like that, and I tell him that I’m not justin and stop acting like we’re the same person.
Then he covered his cantina icons, and I asked if it was okay that he not do that. Anyone who plays vs my WYS knows that I offer to cover up the icons if they like, but I personally find it insulting when people cover them up on me. Dinelle was insisting that he cover them up because he thought id “FORGET” and yes he used quotes and said it like i’d be cheating, which is doubly insulting. An argument ensued and finally he relented.
For whatever reason he thought going turn 1 dash to kessel was a smooth move. Outrider’sg ot no maneuever. So i went down and battled with an interceptor and a cannon he said wait i want to sabotage, and I said before the battle? he said yeah. so he did, and i didnt grab it, then dropped another cannon from my hand. he had anotehr sabotage but it’s unique. I blew out dash and saved 3. He sabotaged my second cannon and i grabbed it. Played a tie next turn to get one of my cannon’s back (he out of commissioned the other).
He sabotaged the cannon in play on the next turn and I got that one back as well when I went to go battle his luke on tattooine. Dropped another cannon but meant to play an all power because of the low probability of shooting luke. Good thing as I drew my admiral’s order for destiny and blew him out of the water. I’m holding space pretty strong but he puts mara on the pulsar skate to wakeelmui and I can’t find another cannon to go shoot it down. He’s draining me for 1/1/1 at the db, the farm and wakeelmui while im cancelling his cantina drain with dreaded imperial starfleet and moving in front of his space drain with 2 dreadnaughts 2 interceptors 1 with a cannon. eventually i trap him and get luke alone at kessel and though he knows luke can’t draw destiny he plays out of nowhere to add a destiny, i laugh and he flips two cards over. then i draw mine adn am like ‘you can’t draw destiny there fool’ and he says “too late i flipped them over! just like justin yesterday” at this point i’m boiling. A few minutes before in a battle at tatooine justin came over to watch and dinelle refused to pay attention to our game and demanded justin acknoweldge the fact that he screwed dinelle. Justin was firm and said play your game, I was ready to reach across the table and throw dinelle’s shitty deck in the trash, screaming at him to get back in the game. He is an absolute prick to play cards against. I think he’s an okay guy away from a card table, but on the table he’s a different guy…
see dinelle acts like he’s really particular about everything, he counts your activation every turn, and announces rules like ‘tatooine lets me move for -1 force’ but then goes and does shady shit like underpays for dash when there’s a card in his used pile already. He did this vs. me multiple times and he underpaid for things multiple times against justin and i’m sure other people will chime in with the same kind of stories. but what really got me, adn what just got me absolutely bullshit on my ride tow ork today was the shit about staring up at justin refusing to acknowledge our game and I really wish i just lost my shit on him. It’s not pretty when I lose my temper but I think everyone would’ve seen a side of me they never knew I have. I ended up beating dinelle by less than 10 in what is a pretty tough match, but I’m glad I beat him and I honestly hope i never have to play him again.
I was going to say a lot more about imarahil and karrdeshark whoever they are being pricks on the boards about kyle beating me. Kyle is a classy guy that I’ve liked a while through vs. and I know he said he got pretty hooked up in our matchup by getting tantiv to naboo turn 2 for a drain of 3 off the bat as well as us all taking colo shield out of our decks that day. but yup, i got beat, i still walked away with more money than him or anyone else at this event save the guys on my team, i knew only me or steve could come out of the bracket and we all help each other out. if people wanna talk shit and continue to discount me as just that other guy on the KTOD can slurp it up come out say shit to my face, and I’ll buy you a drink with all the prize money I get from playing the card game I’m better than you at.
“Can I talk my s–t again?
Even if I don’t hit again?
Dog are you f–king kidding?”
What you are about to read is an account of the most fun I’ve had playing cards since I went to RamapoCon 3 back
in the summer of 2001 which you can read about here:

THE KTOD RETURNS TO WORLDS!
STARRING:
Mike Gemme as Deck
Justin Desai as H2o
Johnny CHu as The Yellow Menace
with special guest appearances by:
Tom “Waltham” Hollingworth
Greg Shaw and his girlfriends cleavage
A skinny Kuperman
and many, many more.
[Preamble]
“Yeee.
And you say Chi city,
Chi city, Chi city”
(note: Prior to the trip to Chicago, I listened to the new Kanye West CD a lot, so the lyrics shown in this TR
reflect my feelings on what I write here with Chicago’s hottest star, kanyeezy.)
The return of the KToD to the SWCCG tournament scene has been previously documented in my MPC report, but I’ll
briefly go over it here for new readers.
When I returned from New Orleans last winter it was because of a pretty awful breakup. To help get over that, I
told Justin that I wanted to get back into Wars. He looked at me like I was crazy. “It’ll be fun, and that’s what
I need right now.” I said.
Our preparation for worlds spanned the entire summer. We made the trip out to East nationals, which Justin won,
qualifying for worlds. My qualification came on that trip as well.
I started out Ohio States 0-2 and won four in a row to get into the top 2. When I handed in my card to Reid Smith
at the end of the last round he said “What’d you lowball to get in?” I didn’t know what that meant but it only
took me a few seconds to figure it out. And those words stuck with me the rest of the summer.
I didn’t play particularly well the rest of the season, though I didn’t play two top teir decks at any event (and
you could argue I didn’t even play one top teir deck at any event). Tom Hollingworth pretty much ran the table at
three mass locals in Waltham, not losing once until the v14 sneak peak event that I ran. In any event, I was
resolved to not choke at worlds, I wanted to play well, and I wanted to hang with my teammates, Justin and Steve
Baroni, who were piling up glass while I was ordering battle droids online.
Serious testing kicked into gear prior to PA states when Johnny Chu made his first of two trips up to Boston to
visit and playtest. At this point, justin was resolved to play light senate and was just starting to think about
dark senate. Steve and I were pretty sure we were going to play endor tanks and we were both leaning towards
profit for light. On this trip is where I first saw Chu’s WYS Nightfall deck and really started to like it.
PA States came and went, and chu got qualified. By Chu’s second trip up, two weeks before worlds, I had my WYS
pretty much finalized and was still leaning towards Endor Tanks. Chu absolutely mopped the floor with his agents
and we were pretty sure that it was unbeatable (which it turned out to be). Justin was set on senate and senate.
At this point steve is sure he can’t make the trip.
Just days before the trip I decided to switch to dark senate, just never feeling comfortable with the level of
control the Endor tanks needed, though we put in some really good cards and thought it was a very solid deck.
[Friday]
“Good morning
On this day we become legendary”
Justin, Lee and I got up at like 4am on Friday to hit the airport for our 6am flight. Justin and Lee stayed up til
about 230 playing cards whereas I went to sleep at 11:30 to get some rest. The flight was pretty uneventful except
for the fact that there were two ridiculous BEASTS on the plane.
These two dudes were head to toe in camoflage and H2o and I felt pretty safe that no terrorists would be taking
over this plane. However, about halfway through the flight Justin realized that those two guys COULD be the
terrorists in which case we were dunzo. These guys were both about 6’4, 265lbs, shaved heads, one of them had a
handlebar mustache and their rock-solid chiseled arms were pushing out into the aisle of the plane.
Speaking of plane aisles, when we were booking the trip I had hte best idea ever: instead of sitting next to each
other, Justin and I booked seats in the same row, both on the aisle opposite each other. This created a natural
heterosexual buffer zone and also made conversation easy and fun!
This really kind of scraggly brunette chick in front of Justin was eavesdropping on our convos like craaaaaazy and
kept turning around and making comments to me! I had seen her kind of check me out earlier and made some decent
conversation early on, but then she turned on her ipod and played Nintendo DS almost the whole flight and that
chemistry kind of got squashed. She had a cuteness to her and I really like those wicked plain, pale girls who
arent that pretty because when I hook up with a girl like that I really get the sense I made her feel good about
her self, and that’s another level of woman pleasing that you can’t get with cunnilingus alone. Also on the
flight, a stewardess through a cup at me, and then poured water on me when I told her she threw it at me, and was
thusly a .
When we landed we had to wait about an hour for Chu to land and in the meantime we saw this older African couple
with CRAZY flourescent colored robes on just walking around the airport on a stroll.
We take a way too expensive taxi out to the hotel we’re staying at: Courtyard by Marriot, official sponsors of the
KTOD and the hotel we’ve stayed at for every card event we’ve ever gone to save Pro Circuit LA when Ryan French
hooked us up with Best Western Anaheim rooms. We were expecting to drop our stuff off at the hotel and hang out at
the store all day but fear not, the beautiful babies at the CbM front desk had a room for us at 11 am!
So we went to the room to chill, watch seinfeld, nap, play cards and finalize our team tournament decks. Justin
and I were set to team together, Chu was going to team with Fred and Lee was undecided on whether or not he was
going to play at this point. Eventually it’s afternoon time and we call to catch a cab to the store. But wait! The
front desk babes hook it up AGAIN and take us in the Marriot Van to the store for Freezy!!!
There was a long wait to get to the team tournament because they wanted to wait until Day 1 was over. In the
meantime I played some connect 4 with Hunter ON PAPER. Says Hunter: “It works. On paper… It works.” NOICE.
ALthough Hunter beat me when I went to a space I specifically told Hunter and the crowd watching the match, that I
could not go to, for if I did, I would lose. We played with colored sharpies on yellow paper and the dots from our
game seeped through onto the table and stayed there all weekend, very noticable, and Justin and I always commented
when we were around those parts.
TEAM TOURNAMENT TIME!
So justin and I are paired up for the team tournament, he’s playing dark: KTOD Huntdown with me playing light,
Lightsaber Combat with Uh-Oh, Figrin D’an and Joh Yowza for retreival tech in non interactive matches.
Game 1: My LSC Music vs. Joe “Max Beedo” Graham’s MKOS
I’d never met joe and I didn’t recognize him, but he was teamed with Thomas Whaley so I was expecting something a
little surprising but definitely not mainstream, when he revealed MKOS I wasn’t sure what to expect. I havent’
seen MKOS since returnign to the game, and I’ve heard Brian Fred say it was good, and I know it was like broken at
one point during my absence from the game. Knowing what aliens could do due to chu’s agents, I decided not to
start Uh-Oh V in case the mkos player came at me hard. Once I saw him really start to stack up, I drew up for Uh
Oh and my musicians. And stack up he did. I’m talking like 5/6 aliens at each site doing Galid Drains.
He left Jabba’s Palace open with jabba/galid/ephant crew at the AC and some other guys at another interior JP
site. He moved the sail barge with a merc pilot and some other aliens to the desert, so I dropped mace and v8 Obi
Wan (who thus forth shall be known as Juice Obi) to JP. He moved his beatsquad over in front of me on his turn
leaving the desert open. LUCKILY I had a flashback to my early years, moving into the desert and not being able to
move out and getting the tar knocked out of me, so instead of moving out, I moved into the palace in front of
jabba and crew figuring I could at least take out galid. He decided not to battle me, like, ever. And I moved to
the entrance cavern or whatever it’s called and he bulked up there, so I moved back in to the AC and battled
killing Galid. Eventually the Jedi both died and i didnt take much damage but with Galid gone I projectioned 2
sites. Couple with the fact I’d finally gotten my retreival going along with a steady drain at naboo i won pretty
handily. FW by X
Justin won his game against Whaley and we move on to face Chu and Lee.
Game 2: my LSC Music vs. Lee Edwards’ FWKTIL
Lee is playing Chu’s fear which is Lewis’ Fear. I know this is a tough matchup. We’ve talked about it being
winnable for light, but I never thought it was. WIthout any space, the retrieval just isnt enough. It is pretty
much a damage race with me retreiving just a little bit. I did some Okay damage but when he’s doing 8 fear damage
and draining for 6 what can retreiving for 3 really do? Nada.
Luckily justin beat down Chu for 22 overflow when Chu forgot to save a force to play panic when justin started
first strike and won by forty. So we move on to
Game 3: My LSC Music vs. PMJ’s Bespin Tanks
Unlike when I test against Chu’s Bespin tanks, PMJ actually got out the free executor turn one, which is scary. I
started Uh Oh knowing I’d have to start retreiving very early. It was an early drain race with him setting up and
then coming at me with Sidious and Arica. I was able to combat Sidious off and then I had a decision to make, do I
beat down arica, or do I take the fight to bespin and go kill some tanks. I decided to zap and kill some tanks.
This game I went 3/3 on swinging at tanks and hitting them, which is pretty bad ass. I ended up taking out his
ground forces pretty handily. At some point he made a slight noob move but it was in depseration as the game
continued to swing my way, but he put thrawn on naboo and didnt fight so i just fry sizzled him. Mainly it was me
swinging and killing tanks that really won the match, but equally important was finding Evacuation control so that
I could go to Bespin with little fear of getting my wookie handed to me.
Meanwhile justin beat his third straight watch your step, no easy task with huntdown and we think we’re supposed
to be playing hunter and reid, but since they had so many timed wins, we acutally ended up playing Angelo and his
girlfriend, which some people snickered at, but truth be told, they were that high up because they hadn’t lost a
match all day and I’m pretty sure they were both 3-0 at that point.
We broke down all the scenarios and we knew if we won one of our games, we would win. We were worried about having
to play Hunter/Reid because even though they had three timed wins between the two of them, if they beat us both it
meant that they would win beacuse 4 vPs would swing it just in their favor.
Game 4: My LSC Music vs. Angelo “Escusi!” Conselo’s Dbay HD
I started evac control but honestly never needed it. Angelo didn’t battle me at all. He did nothing but sit and
track destinies for the longest time so that when he finally came down and I combatted him, he won with two
sevens. I wen’t and initiated battle off planet so that I could get my bith Shuffle off of Evac Control V and
shuffled his decksizzle. So for whatever reason he never battled, I won a few combats, he won 2 all game. There
was some minor interaction off planet but once Justin beat Sybil (Sp?) I knew we had the tournament locked up and
didn’t really pay attention. It was a fun game though and I joked around with Angelo alot. He has one of the all
time greatest laughs and for whatever reason I just felt comfortable joking and having a fun time with him, maybe
it was because he was european, but either way, we had some fun games this weekend. I ended up winning this game
by about 9.
So Justin Desai and Mike Gemme the KTOD are the 2007 World Team Champions!!! We win 150 dollars total and two
trophies, which we knew were cups but we thought were just metal chalices. Turns out that when we showed up the
next day they were 23 oz Glazz Beer Mugs with the SWCCG Logo and 2007 World Team Champions on it! They are easily
the coolest trophies since Matt Sokol won the giant plate in ’99. Some people hate on the plate but Justin and I
have always had the utmost respect for it. A. Raph won one and B. you can serve sandwiches on it. Too good.
We also receive byes for day two of the 2008 World Championship tournament so we literally don’t have to play
another sanctioned game for exactly one year, which is awesome and a relief at the same time. Even more funny, is
that if justin or I were to win Worlds, the bye would be passed down to second place.
The tournament got out pretty late. We caught a cab back to the hotel and for the life of me I can’t think of what
we did for dinner that night. it’s possible that we went to the TGIFriday’s but for some reason I thought we went
there for lunch. Either way, with our decks already set, we were ready for bed.
BUT NO. Justin started feeling panicked about the dark senate, thinking it needed vote nows and/or more space. I
didn’t really want to think about it and said I’d go with whatever he decided anyway.
[SATURDAY]
“damn, here we go again.
people talk exhaust, but when exhaust hits the fan
everything I’m not, made me everything I am
and I’m back to tear it up
haters, start your engines
I hear ‘em gearin’ up”
I wake up to Chu talking on the phone, justin isn’t far behind me and he’s going through cards almost if not
immediately. I’ve talked about this on my Dark Senate blog, and when we go down to the breakfast buffet justin
wants to play Thrawn/Chimera/Imp Command in the senate. I am on board, like I said, but I’m thinking about it all
through breakfast and finally I decide that I can’t play that 13 cost monster in a senate deck that would require
two full turns of saving force to pull off and decide on Zuckuss/Mist Hunter V/V. I do a pretty good job of
convincing him to do the same and I think we made the right choice.
We get back to the shop and do our decklists, shoot the exhaust with people and wait for the pairings. Chu did his
decklists mad fast so as to not have his command card anywhere near ours. Justin submitted ours together which Chu
thought was wicked bad karma. With 40-something people there I wasn’t that worried.
So pairings get called and I’m one of the last people called and of course I get paired up with Hunter, my light
vs. his dark. I really didn’t want to face fear, but I was pretty sure I was going to have to.
A little history on Hunter and I: Back at Origins in ’03 Hunter and I played each other twice. In the first game,
I played Vergance of the Force on my own location and it pretty much won me the game, when he came over to tell me
about it afterwards he was pretty pissed and made it clear that he did not believe I did that inadvertantly. So we
played later on, my senate vs his speeders. At some point he flipped my objective back and when I went to go
battle him I had fulfilled the requirement on flipping my objective but had not physically flipped the objective
back. Hunter was bitter about my misplay, and when I drew a senator for destiny in a key battle, he refused to
forfeit for 6 and stuck with the 3 that was drawin in Edcel Bar Gane. I was pissed but there wasn’t much I could
do.
Let’s see how bitter I was when Hunter sat down and satisfied his starting interrupt with three on table effects,
none of which were endor shield…
Game 1: My Wys Spies vs. Hunter’s SYCFA w/ FWKTIL
So hunter sits down, we do our revealing, and hunter plays three effects. then i play three effects. we shuffle.
All of a sudden he’s like “Wait just a second” and goes through his deck like three times and looks panic
stricken. He gets up from the table and goes to the judges and gets his decklist. I go over to see what the deal i
s and apparently Hunter doesn’t have endor shield V in his fear deck, which i hear is a pretty key card in his
particular deckbuild. So hunter finally gets his exhaust straighetened out, but instead of the three janky effects
that were played with Prepared Defenses earlier, and Endor Shield V was there! In my head I was like OH C’MON,
but, and justin reiterated this later after the game when I relayed the story, that if I’m going to beat hunter,
that’s not the way I’m going to beat him. Instead, I made a sly underhanded comment about his ‘misplay’ during the
game.
I decided I had to go fast so I just dropped whatever I had to space to start draining. I got luke/cannon out asap
and started drawing for han and the falcon. I went to the cantina to satisfy early battle plan but Sidious came
down pretty much immediately. We trade small amounts of damage while we set up. Eventually he gets his fear going
and spreads out, I’m doing the kessel drain for 2 while i get some space together. In my hand I have dash,
outfider, mirax, pulsar skate and melas. He has two forces saved. To do everything I want I cannot grab barrier.
Dash goes down against an ISD and gets barriered. I so want to grab but I don’t. Here’s where i make my mistake, I
drop mirax to the SAME system. Barrier. I drop Melas on outrider.
Next turn Hunter goes lat damage, overwhelmed, good game. I’ve got fear blocked with the toolkit and am taking his
serious damage out of the game. But then, when his deck is sort of depleted and he can activate it all, he tracks
a 5 ,and after searching out his second control/sfs with bewill, set for stuns han. Sure enough he does this for
the next three turns, negating toolkit, thus winning him the game by 17.
Highs: Not being a goldenrod about endor shield V
Lows: making a classic bad decision on the first game of day 2.
Game 2: my DS KTOD Senate vs. LS Speeders vs. Raveling’s boy.
I don’t remember this dude’s name, but I tried talking to him the day before when I was having a conversation
about tee shirts with Mike Raveling. Raveling had a pokemon trainer tshirt that i have, only his is in PRISTINE
condition and mine is faded and looks less opaque than urine (it’s bright yellow, or was). I had on my favorite
tee, my avengers dissasembled tee shirt. Raveling’s boy was like ‘is that when scarlett witch killed everyone’ and
when I replied and started to try and talk comics with him, he basically ignored me. Raveling doesnt read comics
really, so it was like I was talking to myself. Then I’d stop talking and this dude would start talking comics
again, but he wouldn’t really look at me. So there was some social ineptitude there, and that’s all I had as an
impression of this guy, until he laid down speeders, at which point i was like “speeders is bad.”
Right off the bat this guy Leia V’s my lott dodd and next turn when I verify his deck and see x-wings am like Good
game. It takes me a while, and a little too much drawing (no lott dodd sucks) but I get passel argente out, and by
starting imperial decree V i really had him locked down. I set up drains at hoth and naboo and just drained while
he did 2-1 damage a turn. Passel meant that he really couldn’t come down to the system and fight me, all he could
really do was cancel drains with Rebel Fleet, and even that wasn’t enough as I won by 26 or so.
Highs: gettin a win with a dark I played about 4 games with this year, Diff
Lows: None.
Game 3: My DS KTOD Senate vs. Rippetoe’s old school Throne Room Start
When Rip goes Throne ROom, old school careful planning for Farm and Outpost I’m like okay guy. and don’t think
much of it. First turn he drops bacta tank and I really don’t even care so I’m like Lott dodd, toonbuck, go. On
his turn he’s like padme, battle, put her on the tank. I’m a little freaked but i take care of it, and reinforce
at the senate. My turn I drop a few senators and Ability Ability Ability and give it back to him.
Now. I have to tell you, this is the craziest sanctioned game I’ve ever played. We literally battled on every
single turn for the next 20 some odd turns. I could never go into so much detail about that many battles, but I
will give you some highlights: Oh wait, one more thing… re read that last sentence, and then read this one– I
for some reason started first strike.
the next time he came to the senate he had an epp qui gon, jar jar, padme, senator palpatine, and that republic
guy who is a built in houjix.
During the course of the game he killed every single one of my senators at least once (though Baskol was on a
political effect when he got killed [yes he started Scrambled transmission V and he used it 5 times]).
He killed Aks Moe three times. So in total he killed 13 senators, one of EACH UNIQUE SENATOR CHARACTER IN THE
GAME.
I’m pretty sure he altered my senate cam. He might’ve done it twice.
i set up a space drain pretty early to put the pressure on him. Plus considering he had a huge deck only starting
4 cards, I had to do a lot more damage to him, as Senate puts a lot on table. Late game he comes up to space with
some Han Chewie Falcons and kills me, and I keep going there. On the ground I have maul w/ saber and bliz 4 with
Leia RP moving in front of maul to block a drain, and me draining w/ bliz 4 and moving it in front of leia, and
maul to the other site. Thsi goes on for a little too long and I’m able to activate exactly enough to grab vader
with lott dodd, drop him for 8 (goo came out very early) battle, retreive, cut leia, overflow for 10 and pretty
much win the game right there.
It was a mentally gruelling game however, and I was shocked and glad to pull it out. Justin had watched some of it
and was shocked that I won. That would seem to be a running theme.
Highs: Beating a deck I felt was specifically built to beat my deck.
Lows: Starting first strike.
Game 4: My WYS Spies vs. Greg Shaw’s DS Combat.
Now all day at day 1, Justin and I were trying to convince Shaw to show us his girlfriends tittyballs. In this
attempt, I showed Greg numerous pictures of titty balls and cleevage and even a wicked hot chick naked, in just
body paint. Justin offered to play a video clip of himself moaning, which shaw declined. In round 2 of day 2,
everyone had to repair. Justin and Greg were paired and they were going to bet a picture of shaw’s girl’s
tittyballs to the winner, then the repair quashed that. So I made the dealio with greg that if I beat him, he had
to show me some cleevage. He took the deal and we laid it out.
Now my light has no autowins, but ds combat I felt was it’s best matchup. He went down turn 1 with maul and the
sideways saber. I got a lot of force so I went Luke to Tatooine and drew some. he drained me for 4. i didn’t want
that to happen so my turn 2 I sent another ship to kessel and dropped chewie’s atst and two smugglers to the
docking bay and played ultimatum. At that point he put down another jedi to resume the drain for four. I put mirax
in the cantina with lando w/ axe, but i didnt’ have any more characters so I left them alone.
Next turn I it could be worsed his drain of two, knowing that he had at least one omni box combo in his deck. I
had no characters to back up the cantina and hoped that he’d burn serious force on an it’s worse. Of course he
thought and thought and counted and counted and the whole time i’m flipping my hand pretending to pretend to act
cool when in fact I was cool as a cucumber with my it’s a hit in my hand. He used 11 and i cancelled it. he spent
his last 3 forces to drain some more.
So he’s got to do SOMETHING to win this game and he comes down to the docking bay with vader and someone. maybe
boba fett. Either way I had luke with I’m With you Too at tat holding it down and in the end I let him draw 10
battle destiny that took the guys off the walker but left the ATST itself. I cleared his site. Next turn I drop
two more smugglers in the atst and his drains of 4 aren’t competing with my drains of 8 plus 1 retreival. And I
win the game, and see some big titty cleavage pretty handily.
highs: Setting up ultimatum turn 2 with WYS which didnt’ happen once in playtesting.
lows: knowing i got lucky he did not go down to the cantina. And he almost did.
Game 5: My WYS Spies vs. Angelo “‘Scuzi!” Conselo’s BHBM
So I get paired up, once again, with Angelo and again I’m playing light against his dark. We didn’t test BHBM at
all, but I got a taste of Drew Scott’s at PA states, but not with WYS. Playing without luke wasn’t something I was
excited about. Even if he didnt’ play vader, I couldn’t very well deploy luke to tatooine and have him play vader
somewhere like endor and get screwed for 3 forces a turn. So I go to space with everyone else, and anywhere he
goes on the ground, I put an undercover spy. I think he frysizzled one spy, and I just redeployed a new one next
turn. I know at one point I miraxed at the start of my deploy thinking “as long as this isn’t boushhh I’m set” and
of course it was bousshhh who I was just about to deploy with Chewbacca Protector V’s game text. So I was limiting
damage to him and liek a good BHBM player he didn’t put vader out.
It got to the point where I was just doing more damage than him because of my space drains and undercover spies,
so he puts down vader. I do some space deploying and at the last second realize i have to give him luke, luckily i
have three forces saved and send luke to vader via the lost pile. And I also play an uncontrollable fury on his
epp vader.
On his turn he puts vader in the bliz 4 (which, can you even do with a captive?) then moves him to the dstar
docking bay, then into the throne room and duels. He draws a 7 and a 7. Luckily, I just happened to be tracking 2
sevens through my deck. Now they weren’t on top, but I knew where they were, and one of em was i’m with you too
V, which is perfect in this matcup. SO i activate to the IWYT and grab it with mirax, then activate to the other
7. do my draining and drop the effect on luke. Out of the 5 duels Angelo ran, i won three of them, which is pretty
badass. In the end it was the damage of uncontrollable fury that truly won me the game, and that will be a key
factor as the tournament unfolds.
Highs: Beating a former world champ at world champs
lows: miraxing for boushh!
So at this point Justin is 5-0, I’m 4-1. We’re in first and second. Which is pretty frimbazeling badass considering
that we won the team tournament the day before. We take a walk around the building and discuss options to getting
into the top 8. In the end we decide that it really doesn’t matter if I’m playing dark I have the advantage and
should be able to make it so that I’m 5-1 and he’s 5-1.
Game 6: My DS KTOD Senate vs. Justin Desai’s LS KTOD Senate
So we know this matchup and how it goes. For more details see my Blog on the players committee site. I get control
of the senate after 3 or 4 turns mostly because of toonbuck toora and baron and he draws up. He puts down the
threed palace generator core and 4-5 guys there cancelling my ability ability ability. I’ve got a solid space
drain set up, but am never able to back it up and he comes down and clears it twice with Han Chewie and the
falcon. I’m cancelling his drain mostly, and putting his hand back when he can, but It’s hard for me to cancel his
drain, set up space, add to my drain in space and manipluate his hand all at once. I also chase his remnant
senators down, who were chilling in the jedi council chamber. It was a pretty uneventful game but justin made it a
ton closer than it had been in testing. Going into that matchup, it seemed that whatever side won, won by about
20-25. I’m pretty sure I won this game by less than 10 because he was able to handle me in space so well with the
han chewie falcon.
Highs: Ending justin’s 30 game winning streak in the state of chicago
Lows: Beating my friend and teammate at worlds.
Game 7: My WYS Spies vs. Tom Hollingworth’s KTOD Huntdown
I’ve played against tom a lot this year. We’ve gotten some games online. He knew this deck. When I saw HD w/
Conduct Your Search, I was pretty sure I knew his deck too. Tom is also very good, as evidenced by what I’m sure
you all know was a top 4 finish at worlds this year. But Tom continually claeaned our clocks all year and I’ve
been playing against him since he was about 11 years old. We knew each other well and decided that no matter what
happened in the game, neither of us would blow the other out.
it started out like a normal game, I go down with luke to tatooine early and don’t drop kessel. I’ve got a hyper
escape in my hand. Luckily too because he comes down with maul, ship and grabs I have you now with crush the
rebellion. I hyper escape to the luckily drawn rendevous point (Note: When i draw rendevous point in my opening
hand with this deck, i don’t lose). I move luke into kessel, but stupidly because I can’t drain. So i get an xwing
cannon on luke and move him in front of maul and I save three force every turn from here on out.
Here’s where it gets pretty dicey. He’s got choke vader with palps and after zuckuss 4 lom came down and took out
my dash/outrider I had to burn my wokling, I couldn’t grab nightfall and couldnt block his drains. we had some big
battles and I had some classic old school moves, cancelling and redrawing with captain han when he only had
exactly enough cards in his reserve to draw what he deserved, meaning han was just straight up cancelling
destinies in space, I so wish I’d saved more forces!! I also have fury on vader and he isn’t doing anything about
it but losing 2 force a turn. He’s got a steady drain in space by moving maul away from luke, and at the cantina.
The onyl damage i’m doing to him is with fury, since he’s moving away from luke, who i can’t drain with. exhaust is
getting really tight now and time is running out. I’ve got an empty falcon floating around in space and I’ve got
to set up coward so i can retreive with an on the edge.
I had a sweet play all set up, I was going to drop chewie against vader and emperor, edge, battle (he had first
strike out) and lose chewie to cover all the damage. I thought I had some exhaust tracked but wasn’t sure, so when I
had one card in my reserve, I used rycar to check what it was, and it was han’s toolkit. And i’m like okay, i
retreive 3, and tom’s like uhhh you have to take that into hand. frimbazel. not only do i not do my play and retreive,
but now my life force is one less. that’s butt. So ihave to do it NEXT turn, and since my life force is less, I
can only retreive 3 (and not at all with first strike) though I had a 5 tracked. In any event the play was sick,
and I was able to find a melas right after to get him on the floating falcon and do some extra help to luke in
space.
In the end time gets called and if we let the game progress it will be a timed game by 10, but tom sees no
advantage to a timed loss and draws up on his turn to get me the full win.
Highs: Winning a game with 1 card, and a game everyone thought I was going to lose. 3-1 with light!!!
Lows: getting handled in space. I didn’t see that coming.
So I’m in first place now. Chu thought he was playing hunter for the tournament, but If i had won my last game I
would’ve won the tournament.
Of course I get paired with Tom Hollingworth again who just hooked me up.
Game 8: My DS KTOD Senate vs. Tom Hollingworth’s LS Senate
Now tom’s senate is a lot different than jutin’s. He plays the real falcon with captain or epp han, CC leia V, etc
to totally blow out dark space. I was only running 1 tie cannon but an added ship.
I told tom we were going to have a real battle for the senate, but two things were majorly different in this game.
1 I didn’t drop toonbuck and instead dropped the gemmeperor who did absolutely nothing and lost me the game.
Again, if you want more details into this matchup and that caustic play in general, read my blog on the PC site.
Dropping the gemmeperor effectively cost me the game. While I really wanted to hook up tom, I also really wanted
to win day 2 of worlds, which would’ve been huge for me. Unfortunately, with him controlling the senate there
wasn’t much I could do, especially against his super falcon. Eventually he went to the forest with qui gon and
that made it really tough. I went with one more surprise attack to the senate and the game was actually really
close. Tom Drew a few too many cards (about 5) late in the game, and only beat me by about five forces.
Highs: None really.
Lows: Coming in fourth instead of first =(
So that was it for day 2. Chu came in first, justin second, and me fourth, meaning we put three people in the top
half of the bracket, which is all too good for our reputation.
Now. Here comes the good stuff. When Justin and I won the team tourament and were told we were getting glasses, we
thought that they were metal chalices, which were okay, old school trophy, etc. But when we got to day 2 we found
that what we had actually won were 23 oz GIANT GLASS MUGS that say 2007 team tournament champions!!!
We went to TGIFriday’s across from the hotel we stayed at and saw hunter and raveling and a crew go in as well. We
sit not so near them and get this pretty cute waitress with really nice breasts. I ask her if she’s willing to
fill up my mug in the car. She’s REALLY standoffish at this point and even goes so far as to call me a fag when
I’m outside in the car getting the mug. Of course when I get back she COMPLETELY 180s when she sees that it’s a
starwars mug claiming to looooove starwars and harry potter WELL MEE TOOO LADY!!!
So she fills up the mug with sam oktoberfest and i continue to flirt a bit. We actually have a pretty fun dinner,
I bring my beer mug over to hunter and them and they aren’t impressed. We joke with the waitress and her insanely
hot 17 year old sister who is also a waitress. Justin orders pasta with maple syrup and it looks hella, hella
gross. Then the moneyexhaust happens. Her and her sister come over with a little hop step, arm in arm, and go, in
unison “How old are you?!” and I pretty much know, even though I’m 26 and old as exhaust, I got this. Of course the
downside is that I’m leaving sunday night and have to play cards all day sunday. I ask her to hang out tonight,
her friends, my friends, but she’s got plans with a girl from work and doesn’t wanna blow up her friend by
bringing a dude she met at fridays over on the very night she met him, which i completely understnad, but i hit
her with my number and when I’m back at the hotel she texts me to come over and hang with her in the parking lot
until her friend is all set. So I do and we have a pretty good talk just chilling until her friend calls and she
has to bounce. Which sucks but I’m already seeing a couple girls, both of which are hot and I’m not really
sweating it.
Everyone is sleeping when I get back at like 130. The only thing in my head about day 3 is i have no idea what to
play and i’ll figure it out in the morning. I had it stuck in my head that I was pissed i didn’t switch to light
combat on day 3 in 2003 when my light senate really exhaust the bed over day 1 and 2 even though I advanced on both
days (mainly due to the inception of KTOD Huntdown and it’s ensuing dominance). What I really should’ve been
thinking is that I had a solid light deck.
Either way, I think even moreso than Tom Hollingworth, who was everyone’s longshot when we all got on the planes
earlier in the week, I was the “I’m just happy to be here” guy, because I never really gave myself a shot at day
three, and I’d really not felt like a top level player all year. But I went to bed that night with a smile on my
face, and a half eaten quesadilla on my nightstand that I was saving for breakfast in the morning.
Day 3
“It ain’t happen yet
And that’s what the intuition is
When you hop back in the car
Drive back to the crib
Run back to their arms
The *smokescreens*
The chokes and the screams
You ever wonder what it all really means?”
So we get up and head down to the breakfast buffet to start eating. I pass on eating because I ate the leftover
quesadilla right when I woke up when we were deciding what to play. I’ve basically decided to play a solid
lightsaber combat for a number of reasons. A. If I got past tom, it’s the only deck that we think can stand up to
Chu’s Agents, and even that is a long shot. B. I really regret never switching to light combat on day 3 of 2003
and thought that it would be a good move to do it now. Also, I specifically didn’t play light combat all season
(after the MPil the Team Tournament because Justin and I are for some reason known as being Light Combat
players, and I wanted to shake that stigma for this very reason.
This ends up being a pretty substantial mistake for a number of reasons. One being that in 03 my light senate was
not doing very well, whereas my WYS really kicked some wookie yesterday, even against my day 3 opponent, and I
thought I could play better than I did on day 2 in that matchup. I didn’t know what Tom was going to play for
dark, but it was between the Huntdown, Watto and CCT. I thought he’d switch to CCT, but he didn’t. He stuck with
Huntdown.
Before the tournament justin and I went next door to the asian bakery to strategize. Now me and justin are avid
seinfeld fans, and try to watch 3-4 episodes a day on TBS and our local Fox affiliate. One of our favorite Mr.
Pitt moments is when Elaine names the old ragtime tune “Next stop pottersville” and earns mr. pitt a spot holding
the woody woodpecker float at the thanksgiving day parade. Mr. Pitt does this dance and sings “next stop
pottersville! next stop pottersville!!” well the bakery next door is called bakersville, so for the rest of the
weekend me and justin just went around singing “next stop bakersville!” and doing the mr pitt dance.
For Dark I decided to swtich to senate, but I wish I’d considered playing KTOD Huntdown, especially when I showed
up to the tournament and heard Tom asking the judge a question about jedi luke, and I was farily certain tom was
playing Combat.
With all our belongings at the shop (our flight was later that evening) we started the matches. I elected to play
dark first against Tom’s light, because you want to play what you consider the better matchup first, and I was
curious to see if Tom was really playing combat.
Game 1: my KTOD DS Senate vs. Tom’s Super-Luke Lightsaber Combat
A funny moment happened to start the game. Tom put down 2 effects and then was deciding between two other effects
to start as his third. They were unseen to me, but after about 2 minutes of deciding Tom decided to go with Civil
Disorder V. I said to him “Gonna hope to draw into that scrambled transmission huh?” and his jaw dropped as his
face when blank. I had a feeling tom would put that in his deck, and to be honest, I was hoping he’d play it. It
wouldve done another 6-8 more damage against him which couldve been a major difference in the game.
So Tom was playing combat, and my gameplan was to go to space and get that drain of four going early while he sets
up on the ground. So that’s basically what I did. He put down a super luke, with bionic hand, i’m with you too and
a saber down on like turn 1. I was draining in space and dropping his hand and he was draining on the ground. I
don’t have any notes from day 3, but I know eventually he dropped kessel and ships, but I don’t remember what. It
may have been super falcon, I’m not really sure.
Honestly nothing too eventful happened this game and he pretty much just generally beat me by the mid teens.
Game 2: my LS Combat vs Tom’s KTOD Huntdown
Now I knew I had to win, and this is a stupid tough matchup, so I decided that instead of playing crazy
conservative, I was just going to go for it and try to do fast damage and hope he got a exhaustty hand.
My hand had almost all guys so I felt pretty okay. I started evac control, quick draw and wokling, he started
ability ability abilty V which seems to be the most broken card ever in huntdown, especialyl in his matchup.
Apparently tom packed it because he thought i’d go to light senate on day three. So much for shaking that stigma.
So turn 1 I go down with Juice Obi wan and a stick and he comes down with maul, kills him. Second turn I go down
with another jedi, he kills him. Third turn I go down with Lando, he comes down and killsh im. I go down with
ANOTHER jedi, and he comes down and kills him. at this point, all i’ve done was spend forces tog et guys out, i
had no guys left in my hand, and I hadn’t drawn any cards. I’ve been taking steady visage damage, and he’s waxed
everything I’ve thrown out, it’s pretty much over. My plan failed and i’m out of day 3.
To be honest I’m pretty okay with this. I had a good showing, I got handed 150 bucks and some dope packs of
coruscant (though my pulls sucked). I also pulled a black border dark side disarmed, which i don’t even own a WB
of. And Eier pulled a BB Light Disarmed. He wanted to trade, and I said i’ll trade if you throw in a WB DIsarmed
for dark, so I got a 2-1 and he thinks he robbed me but who the hell plays dark side disarmed? not me.
So I’ve been trying to meet up with my friend chrstine for years, and she lives in chicago going to school there,
so i hightail it from the tournament to go to loyola and meet her. the mapquest said this is a 14 mile drive, it
turned into a 40 dollar cab ride. We spent an hour together getting dinner and hanging out (chicago deep dish ftw)
and it was an amazing hour but I had to rush to the airport in a cab with a cabby who refused to break 50 miles an
hour even though I told him I was in a rush, and it was also a 30 dollar ride. SO i basically went on a 115
dollar, 1 hour date during which I didn’t get any. Boner city man.
Now I meet chu and lee and justin at the airport and they eat the rest of my deepdish since we can’t get through
security. In the security line Chu sees one of his third cousins, this other violinist named Rachel who goes to
harvard and has no respect for chu’s music playing ability. We talked to her for a bit and then by the time we got
to the gate, they were boarding and it was time to go.
Me and justin had the dope hetero sexual buffer zone going again, but when we got to our aisle, the hottest
frimbazeling most beautiful girl i’ve ever seen on a plane was in justin’s row on the window, with a seat in between.
Her seat was 27F, the middle one was 27E and justin’s was 27D. First he offered me his seat so I could get to
macking, but I declined, as my airplane game is never very good. But justin, in one of hte funnier moves I’ve seen
him make, is he crossed out the D on his ticket, and wrote E in, so that he could sit in the middle seat. I dunno,
it made us laugh.
The pilot of this flight was a madman. You know when you’re taxing in an airplane and the plane takes that final
turn, then pauses a second before it guns it’s engines to go on the straightaway? Not our pilot. This guy gunned
the engine while taxiing, and we took that 90 degree turn at about 85 miles per hour AT LEAST, and everyone on the
plane was talking about how crazy that turn was and how drunk the pilot must be. Not to mention there were tons of
chicago marathoners on the plane, all fresh off of a marathon that killed like 902342 people from heat exhaustion.
So we get in pretty late, and then I have to drive Lee home and of course instead of writing down directions, he
claims he knows the way to the place he’s living, but gets us lost all the same when we try and head there. I am
pretty pissed because I’m pretty tired from a harrowing weekend. I get home around 2-230 and hit the sac, and
worlds is over.
Now, as a special bonus to those of you who actually read this whole thing, before the props and slops, which
people generally will skip down to, I’ll tell you the origins of taco bill. Because I asked taco bill, why the
hell do they call you taco bill? And he said, when he was little, he used to be able to eat a exhaustton of tacos for
some reason. not anything else, just mad tacos and that everyone in his grade school called him taco bill. And I
asked him if people still call him thatk or if they bumped into him on the street after all this time, would eople
call him taco bill? and he said no, they wouldn’t. bummer. Also it didnt occur to me (and i’ve known taco bill for
at least four years) that taco bill is like taco bell, except with the e changed to an i. wow. I feel really dumb
for not realizing that until right now.
Super Duper PROPS
Justin h20 desai: for being a good partner and player and being there through thick and thin
Johnny Chu: For splitting mucho dinero once again, hooking me up with a money making light deck and being a good
pal. Also for Chewie’s ATST, which I still have, and I’m sure I will get an email in 3 days asking for it back.
PROPS
Baroni for helping with playtesting and being a great player to learn from. I learn alot from our games and I wish
he could’ve made hte trip.
Lee for the shared times and borrowed cards.
Eh. I’m kind of sick of props and slops, let me just do shoutouts.
Hunter: you > me @ connect four
Shaw: Boobs. also, you blew me out with the max rebo card, which someone slipped into my bag before i left!
Taco Bill: You’re so emo
Angelo: “Scuzi!”
Angelo’s babe: You had no idea what I said all weekend but still laughed, and that cracked me up.
Tom: Waltham!
Fred: Don’t make fun of my Invasion deck unless you want the wrath brought down
CT: *WINK!*
Raveling: Pokechu!
Rippetoe: please send me bomb wookie wacky decks for the MPC
h2o: Next stop bakersville!
Chu: you are a fart machine
Henry: glad you got the yelling down
Mark: thanks for the wendys! and the rides!
Honestly, I could keep going for hours and hours but It’s taken me two weeks to write this TR, and I’m pretty sure
it dwarfs chu’s (even though he said his was fifteen pages, I doubt it’s longer than this) and I really just want
to post it for the love of god.
Invasion/In Complete Control has a really bad rap right now.
And it’s really not a bad deck.
really.
I first got the idea to build one of these off decktech.net when Phil Otter posted his In Complete Control deck from the European Championship. Taking a look at the new virtual cards for that deck and his list, I thought I could make it better, and I thought it could be a very playable deck.
There are a lot of tanks played in my area, and we’d been testing with Lee Edwards a lot who has been running Endor tanks for a few months now. I’ve witnessed the tanks’ power first hand and decided they could most easily go in this deck, so I put in three tank commanders and three tanks and made some other meta calls and came up with this list:

This list started tearing through everything we had. The toughest matchup for it was QMC aliens which pretty much went 50/50. Either they left you alone at the system while you made all your drains, never lost more than 2 to their drains, and was able to hit and run on cloud city, or they moved over to naboo, and you moved over to bespin, flipping you back but making them pay for all their drains, while you continue to not have to pay for yours and if you play it smartly, can still go over to cloud city and do some serious damage, especially when all your droids are deploying for 1.
The major problem with Invasion is holding the system. Having to control two specific locations makes this deck very vulnerable, and your inability to play a decent space package makes holding naboo that much harder. One card that went in, and gets pulled turn 4 in just about any game is breached defenses (v). This really puts a hamper on all those light decks that just run HCF x2.
Activation was becoming a problem, especially if I couldn’t get the bridge out fast, so alternate methods needed to be researched and I came up with security Precautions V. THough you have to be tricky with this card because if you’re adding to your generation at the throne room, SSA-1015 won’t be making those jedi deploy for +4. So what I generally did, if I had a tank in my hand, was go down to the battle plains with a tank and a tank commander and grab Sec Prec V with crossfire to get some mass generation going. That tank is pretty safe on it’s own, and it allows you to save some serious force to deploy a nemoidian and enough droids to make it stupid for your opponent to come down to the throne room. The trick here is that you just throw the throne room on the other side of the swamp so that your Sec Prec V isn’t affecting the throne room, thus allowing your SSA-1015 to neuter the jedi who make it harder for you to hold that site.
There was still the problem of space, and to be honest, I played this deck at PA states this past weekend because there’s really nothing you can do against HB matching pilots. I can chuck as much forfeit fodder on there as I want, but it just slows you down. I suppose you could sit there and not flip until you had the Blockade flagship with Daultay and OOM-9 Piloting with Sidious, P59, and two random battle droids and/or tanks as forfeit fodder, but it just weakens the rest of your deck. The Chasm shield made the best thing going for this deck (The change to the battle destiny ruling) go right out the window, basically making imperial justice unnecessary.
After some more subtle changes, here’s what I ran at PA states:

Nothing Can Get Through Our Shield
The Deflector Shield is too strong x2
Commander Ping AO
Nothing can get through our shield blew because it makes all your droids in space forfeit zero, but it was still huge against I’m With You Too (v) so I had to leave one in. Deflector shield is too strong makes my tanks forfeit zero in space, but since there are only 3 of them, it became the go to Theed Admirals Order, which is what makes Daultay Dofine (v) so strong.
So my first game at PA states I got matched up against Bordier playing MWYHL space with hit and run Rebel Techs. He started squadron assignments so I was pretty fearful. I ended up just bulking up at the system with the full package, daultay, 00m, sidious, p59 and 2 droids. So no matter what he threw at me, I could hold the system for at least two turns. He was really hampered by not being able to complete his jedi tests (every time he drew destiny it was a 1,2, or zero and every time he lost a card to a drain off the top it was a high destiny interrupt). He came to fight me in space later in the game, but My bulky forfeit and the droid racks, along with all his immunity being -3 (Dash is immune to destiny <1 ftw) I was able to hold off and win.
My second game I got paired off against my partna Justin Desai playing light senate. Now Invasion had beat his light senate every game we tested whether I was flipped or not, but I still wasn’t feeling very confident in this matchup because he made his Senate a little heavier hitting on the ground lately. Either way I got stomped with some really bad luck in this game. First turn I activate 5 and go to deploy Daultay Dofine and he’s in my force pile, that’s never happened. and it’s 1:10 odds, so I started drawing and wasn’t in the bottom card in my force pile? shitty. So I beef up at the system a little with some forfeit fodder while I save force for a few turns to deploy 4 guys to the throne room. and I’ve finally gotten enough to do it and isn’t the throne room in my force pile? and isn’t in 8 cards down? so now he’s activating a ton and i have to start saving force again and it just slowed me down so much that he was able to go to endor with luke and start draining, which forced me to go down a little eariler to the throne room than I wanted (even so late in the game) which meant his EPPs were able to clear me out turn after turn because i was only generating enough force to pull 2 guys off the racks and deploy them both to the throne room.
Eventually he got enough time to set up a drain at the 3-2 site and I lost by 17. I don’t know if I necessarily couldve won that matchup, but I know it was winnable and I know i got royally screwed.
My third game I got matched up with Hidden Base, which is just an autoloss. This deck just about cannot beat HB. He came down with a huge beatdown squad a little sooner than I expected and was able to clear me out of the naboo system pretty early (and made me take mass overflow while doing it). Though I was spread out at all three naboo sites, I didn’t have enough time to probe his system and do enough damage, while he was spread out at every system with an xwing at each.
So this deck really isn’t bad. In fact I think it’s pretty good. The only thing that will consistently beat it is hidden base with matching pilots and even then, if I had the correct Admirals order out I wouldn’t have taken any overflow against Kingery and I mightve been able to do a bit more damage. Either way, it’s probably too weak against HB to play at worlds, but if you can figure out a way to definitely hold that system, give it a shot. The deck beats house on the ground, any time your opponent draws an interrupt for destiny you place it out of play for some neato direct damage, it drains pretty heavily if they leave you alone and the tanks made a world of difference, really making this deck top tier in my opinion. Their ability to go and fight, or hold a site with just two cards while doing damage with We’re in Attack Position Now, is hella-strong.
Give my list a shot next time you want to completely thrash Invasion.
[Edit: This is the deck that led to the breaking open of Don't Forget the Droids V and its ultimate errata]
So I’ve been running “Hyperdrive” since Ohio states in which I finished second losing to Endor Ops and beating two “ROPS” decks. 2-1 for light is pretty good right now in my estimation.
I really dig this deck, so I brought it to Kashyyyk Regionals when I lost to ROPS (I couldn’t get rid of veers all game, beat Watto (autowin) and lost, by 1, to Matt Sokol’s huntdown when the game ended on his turn, with him electing for me to lose to Visage of the Emperor first.
Because the generation in this deck is just OK, paying for drains can get tough while trying to fortify your ground team. So what about trying to fit space into the deck? The front side of the objective lets you pull Coruscant or Tatooine once per turn, so you won’t have a zero for a system floating around, but you start no effects, so getting space going is pretty tough.
Before we venture into the realm of possibility, let’s take a look at my decklist…

Okay, so that’s a LOT of interrupts. 25. 22 of which have noice destiny.
Before we start thinning out the deck, lets figure out what space package could be best and then decide how many cards we need to cut. I’m figuring this out as we go, I don’t have a set plan, this is being done in real time!
As far as I see it we have 3 options
Firstly, you have Radiant VII. What’s cool about this? We Wish to Board at once pulls the ship, it can also pull Get to your Ships. So it would make a lot of sense to put in some WW2BA1, Sqadass, 1 ship and one of each pilot in there, with the system that’s 7 cards we need in there. 8 if we want to play 3 WW2BA1, which makes a lot of sense. We don’t NEED I’ll take the leader, because the opponent (because of Captain Madakor, who limits them to one destiny) but it’s only immune less than 5, or we could play 2x moving into attack position. The AO might be better because of the destiny and because it stays on table (for the most part). Radiant 7 has no weapon, so there’s really no defense up here, you kind of just have to try and get lucky. We could run houjix combo to add some destinies, but now we’re getting up to a fifth of our deck devoted to space, which could really get messy. Let’s say to be safe we need 8-9 slots to run this package.
Space package #2 would be Ric Olie in Bravo 1 and Officer Dolphe in Bravo 2. Rick adds two destiny, and Dophe makes opponent’s BD -2 always. Problems: multiple destiny totally effs over these guys and their crappy immunity. Even if we run three I’ll take the leaders, the multiple destiny will just run it over. You’ll do a hell of a lot of damage yourself, but once one of the ships goes down, you’re left with just a Ric, and then, who knows if he’ll be around after that. So we need one of each ship, one of each pilot, 2 ITTL, at least one darklighter combo, at least one get to your ships and a wish to board at once, a minimum of 11 cards basically. Not looking to good as I think we can go radiant 7 for less cards.
The last option would be to run dash and his ship, which is only one ship one guy, 2 darklighters, a get to your ship, and 2-3 moving to attack position, wish to board at once and a boshek. This is about ten cards. Probably better than the ric olie stuff because it’s one ship, means we can utilize Moving into attack position, we can reduce power.
Right now, I’m leaning towards the Radiant VII beacuse of the only one destiny, which let’s use use ITTL more effectively, the characters are republic so they’ll be forfeit +2. But here’s the major problem, which LT. Williams do we use? THe new virtual one is great because she draws destiny on her own, the non-v one is great because unless they have ability >6 at the system, destiny draws are -3. ZIMH eff’s this guy up, but with only one destiny and just 4 power, it’s unlikely that the’ll be able to hurt you too badly. ALSO, we could pack one Lando in Falcon to come down out of nowhere and draw some destinies against ZIMH. Pretty interesting.
Let’s start cutting from the deck.
Lightsaber proficiency is cool because it can deploy as a react with Cz-3 but it’s really not that important.
Advantage I think needs to stay in beacuse it helps you beat HD big time.
The Signal V is kind of weak but otherwise you have no real way of getting those sabers.
8d8 is gonzo, as is a garbage chute and
scrap one escape pod.
Cut I hope she’s alright. This is a tough call but it’s really only for fear, no other deck is hurt by this.
Senator Palpatine is gone, so is might of the republic. If we get yarua we get him. if we need him, we’ll draw up for him.
I love nabrun leids, but your deck is built to stay at the J-yard, so we’ll scrap it.
so here’s what’s gone and what’s in-
- 1 escape pod
- 1 lightsaber proficiency
- 1 I hope she’s alright
- 1 8d8
- 1 senator palpatine
- 1 might of the republic
- 1 signal v
- 1 nabrun
- 1 garbage chute
(9)
+1 Radiant 7
+1 Williams
+1 Madakor
+2 We Wish to Board at Once
+1 get to your ships
+2 Moving into attack position
+1 Coruscant
We’re lowering the destiny pretty consistently (though coruscant will come right out of your deck.
We basically have to go with williams v. because in the event you get Get to your ships you need to be able to draw a destiny, and with Moving to Attack position, we don’t need the BD to be -3 nearly as much. I went with Moving to Attack position because once your flippd you retreive one force (into hand) whenever you draw destiny… so when you play MTAP itll be the top card, which means you get it right back, pretty sick little combo. I’d actually like a third one in there, but I don’t think we can fit it.
So the new list looks like this:

I really encourage you to test this deck out. If you can establish that drain of 3 at coruscant it would be a devastating addition to the deck. Maybe you have an idea for another card to cut to add in another Moving to Attack Position. I’m considering dumping a Don’t forget the droids, but man you really want that combo ASAP to protect obi wan.
please post here any results you have from testing this deck out and let me know how it goes, I’ll do the same!
