My Spurs go Jingle-Jango

When I jumped on the development team for 8.1, one of the things that really grinded my gears about the stremf of the lightside was the Home One package, specifically Verrack. When it comes to the Home One package, everything the dark side has pales in comparison to its efficiency and overall power. The dark side had a really strong executor for a while, but lacks space packages with staying power.

This is something I wanted to address immediately, and was able to contribute to when I saw the design team had conjured up a new Boba Fett / Jango Fett / Slave I package.

Awesome. I was so pumped. However, I wasn’t super impressed with it’s efficiency and power compared to the Home One. Without a Verrack errata, this group of cards was going to take some work to be a powerhouse. One of the problems with the package lacking power was that since we were making assassins a potential tier 1 deck, we wanted a Boba Fett who could be good on the ground and in the air (and he is). We wanted the package to be efficient, and to pull itself, and we ended up making that very likely to occur with the game text of Fett and the Slave I.

But, I really wanted this Jango to be kind of awesome. The previous Jango isn’t great, and Jango wasn’t great in the movies unless he was piloting the Slave One. I took this into account when I took a look at the designed Mandolarian and made the following suggestion: Since Jango has a propensity in the movies to work with other characters (Zam, Dooku, Sifodyas, Boba), why not make him add a destiny. Just add one. All the time. +1 battle destiny. So that’s what we did.

Also, Jango was a beast in the Slave I. A beast! Did you see him in that asteroid field? Don’t you remember the sound quality of his siesmic charges? I do. They rocked. You couldn’t kill Jango in Slave I when he was rocking the control panel with Boba cackling at his side.

So without further adieu, I give you The Mandolarian, Father of Fett.

•The Mandalorian, Father Of Fett [Lando System? (V)] 1
[Virtual Set 8.1 –Dagobah – R]
CHARACTER – ALIEN
Lore: Trade Federation. Assassin. Scout.
POWER 4 ABILITY 3 ARMOR 5
Text: [Pilot] 3. Adds one battle destiny. While piloting Slave I with Boba (unless your [V4] objective on table), it is immune to attrition <9. SD-17 Homing Missile fires for free (and may be lost when fired), is a matching weapon for (and may deploy on) The Mandalorian.
DEPLOY 4 FORFEIT 6
[Pilot] [Warrior]
Set Icon 8.1

The main reaction to this guy has been, DAYYUM. COOOOL. Then people say, why make the missile go lost?!?! It’s so you can redeploy it with things like Gift of the Master and 3,720-1 (v). The missile is excellent becuase it can hit vehicles and make characters lost, but since you can’t stack it on Imperial Gunrunner and missing your pull with it is a huge boner, we decided to make this weapon really work repeatedly for The Mandolarian and make him someone who could do some serious damage.

This Jango is awesome. I really wish he wasn’t destiny 1, but for a destiny 1 guy, at least he absolutely beats the world.

First off, too many characters have been drawing if not able to otherwise for years to get around silly things that stop destiny. Eff that, it’s made characters so watered down. Jango coming in and playing well with everybody on the dark side is excellent. Yes, it’s a bummer that he’s still not a bounty hunter, and I wish there was a way to make him one and still have awesome game text, but there isn’t, and that’s just something we have to deal with from a design standpoint.

All in all, this is my favorite card in the set. I think it is one of the most flavorful, the most versatile, and I haven’t even had to mention the fact that he makes the Super Slave I immune <9, putting it in territory with the Super Falcon and the Super Home One as being a ship that is extremely hard to kill. However, you’ll notice that we restricted it from working with Hunt Down V. Even though I don’t have a lot of experience with HDV, my gut reaction when helping develop these cards was that a super efficient super falcon-ish type card was going to be a beast in a deck that was already hyper efficient. So while you can still play this awesome combo and allow it to terrorize your skies, you won’t get the Immunity <9 bonus, which kind of pre-balances the combo.

Now, if only this guy had an insanely high maneuvered starship to pilot that made him deploy for cheaper….

Virtual Set 8.1 – Assassins from a Development Standpoint

When I was asked to rejoin the Development Team after a fairly long absence from it, I was kind of excited. It’s always flattering to be asked to join something, but after a prolonged absence from tournament play prior to the 2012 MPC I wasn’t as well versed in SW:CCG-ease as I would’ve liked. However, I decided to accept the invitation because in my preparation for the MPC I found that the dark side was significantly worse than the light side; so I joined with the sole intention of pushing for very strong dark side cards. The result of which is a new decktype: Assassins.

Hrm.. Assassins; we’ve seen that word before as there certainly is a card named Guild of Assassins. But, we’ve seen the word assassin as early as Premiere in the lore of Ket Maliss and Djas Puhr, and in the very next set with soup-eater Dannik Jerriko and the non-unique Rodian. All four of these characters are assassins, as are any other characters you find with Assassin in their lore: Snoova, Guri, Dengar, Keder the Black; and it doesn’t stop there. All the IG-88 personas are assassin droids and thus assassins, as are all those characters way back in Jabba’s Palace who have “Plotting to kill Jabba” in their lore. We’ve made a slew of new characters Assassins as well.

The idea here is that we wanted to start focusing on making “smaller” characters better, and that starts in 8.1 with Assassins. We’ve tried to push the envelope a little in terms of non-mains, and as a result you’ll see things like a forfeit 6 Aurra Sing with strong game-text. You’ll see a pipe-smoking Bounty Hunter who is always a Black Sun Agent and also an Assassin. Ket Maliss is an assassin who causes direct damage. We’ve been careful to keep power up among these non-mains (as that is important when trying to Assassinate characters), but there is no restriction on which characters you can play. However, you will face having non Assassin characters deploy +3 because of the objective.

Oh, yeah. There’s a new objective.

The current set-ups for dark severely lack in comparison to light setups, and we took that into account when developing Contract Killers/Feared Throughout the Galaxy as a hopeful tier-1 dark deck. However, what we really wanted with a dark side deck was sheer power. I don’t know how many other objectives grant you direct damage, immune to Simple Tricks and Nonsense retrieval, force drain bonuses, cross-galaxy site-to-site movement, defense value bonuses, and most importantly, outside-of-battle character removal.

The idea here is that if we’re going to be using non-main characters to flip our objective, but we also didn’t want to develop another swarm deck similar to Mystril or Agents of the Black Sun. We wanted a dark side deck that focused on the scum of the galaxy and their propensity to work alone trying to make their way in the universe. Thus the focus was on Bounty Hunters and that word again, Assassins, to be playable characters similar to mains, fighting on their own and at times in pairs, and of course able to gang up on the light side for serious damage potential.

Obviously there was some room for this deck to be extremely abusive and making sure this didn’t happen was a serious concern for the development team throughout the D/D process. One of the most challenging things about the objective was making the out-of-battle-character-removal fair and balanced while still creating double-sided card worth playing. We struggled a lot with a way to get the objective flipped and keep the objective flipped and what we’ve created is a pretty versatile and unique flipping system we think you’ll enjoy. It’s something I haven’t seen employed on a purple card before, and I really think we pushed the envelope in terms of creating something new, interesting, and powerful when it comes to the “Flip this objective” text. It was by far the most challenging part of making the set when you take into account we want this deck to reach tier 1 at some point (if not right off the bat).

One of the most fun parts of making this deck better was coming up with a new, unique character pool that drew on previously printed cards in both the decipher and the PC era. I didn’t even know Rodian (v) was a card, and now it’s showing up on lots of playtesting lists because he’s an Assassin and he pulls 4-lom (you can thank SoCal for the technology). Having it dawn on me that IG-88 w/ Riot Gun might be an Assassin because he is an Assassin Droid was a fun part of deckbuilding that you can’t find by searching for keywords on PolarHaven. I also remember being a teenager and ripping open packs of Jabba’s Palace and thinking it was sweet that some aliens had “plotting to kill Jabba” in their lore, but bummed out because it didn’t actually mean anything. Now those characters are finally being used and open up limitless opportunities for virtualizing in 8.2 and beyond. But, we didn’t just focus on making old card playable; by making “Assassin” a keyword has also allowed us to create powerful support cards with sharp focus that allows us to help alien decks, but not push things like Agents of the Black Sun back over the edge in terms of power. So as we continue to design and develop more Assassin characters, alien decks in general will get stronger and our hope is that scum, and other alien based decks can rotate back into power among the dark side.

As you can hopefully tell, we’ve tried to put a focus on characters who aren’t mains and allow them to function as mains. If Sith are your bag, then you can feel free to pack them into the deck, and pay a premium for them to hit the table. If not, you should have a lot of fun and win plenty of games Assassinating light side characters (even if they’re hiding in vehicles), and chewing bubble gum (tastes better when pried out of a cold Jedi’s hands).

7.4 Set Review

I’m not going to sit here and wax intellectual on all of the V-Cards in 7.4 because I feel that it will sully my triumphant return to blogging for this website. However, our latest V-Set has been out for about a month now and I’ve had some time to seriously evaluate and play with the cards and would like to express my opinion on some.

Yadda, Yadda, Dark Side:

First up, the Tank Stuff.

I find it both cute and telling that our two tank helpers were made by members of SoCal.

Baktoid Amor Workshop – This is an interesting card, allowing you to essentially start four effects in a Combat Readiness V Tanks deck. Being able to start the Tatooine System and Watto’s Junkyard then pull the Desert Heart is very good. Being able to start Endor and The Dark Forest then pull the Forest Clearing is probably even better. God forbid we use CR-V to start the bunker, use Blizzard four to pull Derdram V and move him inside, and put a Perimeter Patrol on the Sanctuary Moon… GG’s Light side. I’m not going to spell the whole start out for you, but it’s pretty damn good.

But Gemme! A deck like that can’t activate well, can it????

Of course it can, with the OOM Command Battle Droid – This guy is very good. He adds a dark Icon wherever he is AND he adds one to your force drain. While his forfeit isn’t as nice as the tank commander, and he won’t give you the ping off We’re in Attack Position Now, he still draws you your two destiny in the tank. Him on Endor giving you drains of three at each of your locations (Dark Forest, Forest Clearing, Back Door) is disgusting. Did I mention he pulls either Cease Fire or Defensive Fire once per game? That’s what I thought.

Floating Refinery is a very good card. With the recent addition of storm clouds, giving us this to put retrieval back into cloud decks that are lacking any real activation advantage. Dropping the Obsidian TIES to each of your cloud sectors while protecting them with Talon Rolls is a quite good strategy against the heavy Capital-Based space packages out there is very good. It doesn’t take too much to keep these guys safe. The added activation basically makes up for having to pay to drain, and the retrieval makes up for your having to turtle. Let the Protocol Failure combined with some Propagandas and undercovers deal with the ground and let your Refinery retrieval deal with any space drains your giving up. Turtle at one ground site and make it extremely hard to attack you there (maybe Jabba’s unbeatable crew at the Audience Chamber, maybe Greivous somewhere with his helpers? You figure it out), and let that Storm Clouds force drain bonus get you there.

Your Powers are Weak Old Man, Sidious’ Lightsaber, Cyborg Commander’s Lightsabers - Cute plural on that last one, and cute card choice. Much applauded. It seems the PC has realized just how damn good they made Master Kenobi and now give us three cards (in addition to the four or five cards that already exist) to stop Kenobi’s Army from moving to their used pile in order them to be abused by 3P0 with his parts showing. The lightsabers are pretty balanced since they are relegated to characters who are pretty shitty. The interrupt is great b/c it can go in any deck as a one or two of, not kill the destiny, and have applications with its second effect, though I think it’s pretty lame that it’s a lost interrupt. It’ll get used for sure, but I don’t think it’s so strong that it couldn’t be used once per game instead of lost.

Where are you taking this… Thing? - another cute card title/pic. PC is killing it this set. I think this is pretty good. It’s a decent response to Nabrun, but it’s a pretty awful answer to Master Kenobi and Resiliance. This is one of the few instances where the PC actually made something stronger for dark than it did for light, but it’s not a whole lot; the only advantage really is that it can be pulled by Fanfare, but with all of the other Immediate Effects you need to pull right now, that’s not much of an answer. That already only makes it just slightly better (or at least just more timely) than Oota Goota Solo? Neither of which are event close to as good as the bad ass light side card Quite A Mercenary.

Cards for both sides:

Desperate Counter V & Hindsight V - These cards are pretty great and I think they are a must include in any deck now (I told you we had too much to pull with Fanfare already). They can stop a big drain of three that would otherwise really put you in a tough spot early, they handle things like blowing the bunker, Center of Tyranny, and Hindsight combined with an Atrocity follow up makes the dark Hoth objective look downright stupid to play (if it wasn’t already).  Giving the opponent any card is pretty moot when you can soak this amount of damage at a key part in the game. The other game text is almost irrelevant, except for maybe late game to stop some tracking, but few games go to that level without already having used this to soak damage.

Light Side:

Rebel Sacrifice - Communing is already so good that I don’t really see what the death star is adding for you. Your activation isn’t going to be very good, and you can almost definitely find something equally strong if not stronger on Tatooine, the system with the most related sites in the entire game. This also eats up a starting slot. Sure, you can use Path of Least Resistance to run guys around, but if that’s your plan, why aren’t you just playing QMC anyway? We tried to make this work at the beginning of the month but found that tatooine and exterior sites with nice text are just almost always better.

Lucky Shot - This card is almost unnecessary. It’s not amazing, but it’s a card light side needed. One of the only things dark side can do is give their ability 3 characters big forfeit because of Light’s ability to draw lots of destinies easily with very little to stop it. A Phantom Menace and Revenge of the Sith can be really difficult for Jedi-Based decks. This takes care of them pretty hard. I don’t really understand the Close Call cancelling, but Outflank has been a blowout before and this is just another utility card with a decent destiny that a deck like TRM or the 2/2 deck can use to it’s advantage.

Yavin 4: I actually don’t mind this system. I don’t know why you’re playing it, as it seems like it takes a LOT of energy to liberate the entire galaxy. I do like it however for any decks that are looking for a second system and don’t want to have to pack anything for Lateral Damage. Lots of players like to have an extensive space package in their mains based decks, playing this with Kiffex makes it extremely hard for you to run into problems in space with things like Artoo in Red 5, Dash in the Outrider, the Super Falcon and the Home One, all of whom are already fairly impervious.

Temporary Foothold - This is the perfect card for a deck like 2/2 or TRM. Or really any light deck that can easily hold a system and a site (think Home One and an immunity Jedi). It stops the protocol failure combo, This is Outrageous and control, but you still have to be able to handle undercovers. I don’t think this will see too much play, but the aforementioned decks or say, Profit or COT, might really benefit from this card.

Mace Windu - Now this is a card. A destiny 3 fully Immune Jedi? This is an excellent answer to Darth Vader, Betrayer of the Jedi. Forfeit unable to be reduced is an extremely strong mechanic and his retrieval and total weapon destiny +1 text are also solid. This takes a lot of oomph out of the very strong BOTJ, but I think that he was one of the few advantages dark had on the ground versus these guys. Mace Windu goes next level and negates half of Vader’s very good text.

Booster Terrick - I don’t know what deck is going to play him, but if you can find him a home, stealing a star destroyer is straight up stupid. Imagine getting your hands on a Conquest?? Thank youuuu.

Combined Fleet Action - This is a great card to have active so that your opponent only has to do about 14 damage to your life forces for a win.

That’s all I really have to say. I’ll be sure to post more exciting things after the MPC and my return to serious tournament play after a two year absence. Between the MPC and World there is plenty of time to talk about decks and plays, so this was mainly a dry run to get some awareness going into that.

1995: Cantina Brawl was printed in. A lost interrupt that mentions the card Tatooine: Cantina
2000: Watch Your Step was an objective printed: starts Tattoine Cantina, plays interrupts from lost pile.

2007: Cantina Brawl shows up at worlds dominating the much stronger dark side of the force with rare character removal in a game that nary features any (along with uncontrollable fury). Before this point, the card has nary seen play.

2010: A virtual card is made that prevents Cantina Brawl, a card printed in the very first set of cards the game has ever seen from being played fifteen years later, ten years after a card that was purposely meant to abuse it was printed; three years after it made y’all feel stoopid.

2011: the word “nary” is used three times in a blog post, setting a record for most uses of the word in one sitting.

2008 Coruscant Regional – Winner’s Tournament Report

I’d been to a Coruscant regional once before, back in 2002 when the SWCCG world was a bit larger and starting to take notice of what Justin and I were doing in the northeast with a couple of guys named lott dodd and soontir fel. After Justin won the Kashyyyk Regional that year it was my turn to take a shot at it in Coruscant as I couldnt make the Kashyyyk regional.

Justin and Hayes Hunter made the trip down with me (truly one of the great trips we ever took) and things went well. I came in first after the swiss after beating Johnny Chu with the dark senate and it was time to play the final against him. I won the first game with Dark senate by 18 so all I had to do was lose by less than that and I had my first championship win. Here’s an exerpt from my TR on decktech.

Finals game 2
he deploys executor and gets him at endor draining, i drdop han/chewie/falcon and bravo fighter, hes like theyre each plus one, so i pay the two, an battle.. dont break executors immunity… but… fukc becuase of the +1 deploys… i onyl have two cards left…. bye bye han chewie falcon… bravo fighter vs. the world… he drops chirnoonoo and thrawn, battles i dont even know if he imp commands all i konw is that i lost 23 cards after the bravo fighter.. after that i still had a shot if i pulled quigons saber out of lost, which i forgot to do, and he just combatted me out because i was trying to pull off an edge instead of track sevens for combat and i lost by 19 FUKC!

Justin and Chu and I still talk about that Bravo Fighter debacle when talking about our playing history and how it cost me a regional win 6 years ago. We were even talking about it on the way to the regional on Saturday.

Back to the 2008 timeline, I was really liking a tanks deck of tatooine with watto to prevent battle destiny at one site and the moisture farm to make all my cannon shots +2 (total) in and out of that site, a heavy space package and occupation with some trickery. And this was BEFORE v16 when the deck got two HUGE boosts to it. Possibly the two best cards in the deck came from v16. I’ve been testing this deck since before the Kashyyyk Regional that I ran last month and played it at the cash event (2-0 against profit) the week before so with the new cards, some new tech and some strategizing I felt good bringing this to the Regional.

For light justin and I were going to play combat but after testing it things looked bad. it would beat huntdown but might lose to absolutely everything else. So we went to bed with zero ideas and woke up with even less. I called steve about a possible tigih list but that felt poor so we went with mainstays. I played ktod profit but lately steve had changed it a bunch so I kind of went back to the way we built it originally and threw in luke’s ulitmatum which chu showed us and is awesome. Justin played wys tweaked a card or two differently than mine. Justin had come off wys entirely too quick. I had a rough go with it at the cash event and needed to step away. I’ve been playing wys since worlds (before worlds if you count a month of testing it) and just needed a different deck.

Chu went with profit a couple cards different than mine and his old school agents with some really nifty tech that can really hose mains decks with jeedai.

One interesting note, I decided to pack one bravo fighter V to go take out zuckuss at a system if i had to (you can auto forfeit him to zuckuss after clearing the system even if they decline destiny) and it also gave me an excuse to play strikeforce V under my SE… but i have had bad luck at using bravo fighter at coruscant regionals in the past sooooo we’ll see.

After the normal pre-tourney goings on of decklists, paying etc it was time to play the games and here they are.

Game 1, my Profit vs. JW Millett’s HDADTJ

at least I think it was jw millett. JW was playing Docking bay HD and started two aliens, epp mara jade and boba fett bh. that really locked up what he could do first turn as he really was unable to back up the audience chamber well. he didnt do anything turn one. I got 3po down with saitor and said go. He dropped myn kneugh V with vibro ax from under the shield and said go. He didnt play the restricted access shield.

I had obi and saber and massa luke in my hand so they came down with two sabers, I missed the bounce on fett but clashed mara and then played satm/bp lost to get fett out of there leaving just myn and his 4 power and no destiny to my hit squad. After that it was still a while before he got vader out. I went and killed him with yoda and then he got vader at one dbay adn bliz4 at another dbay late but he wasn’t able to do much damage to me and I won by 25 forces.

FW 2+25

Game 2, my Tatooine Tanks vs. Some dude’s CPV Tatooine start

well at first I was like CPV this dude is probably a scrub then I was like wait, I’m doing CRV so maybe I’m a scrub. Shiza. he converted my tatooine which kind of Effed with my activation but needless to say this was a nutty game. He went up to space turn two with luke in red 5. I came down my turn 3 with Vader v, tarkin, personal shuttle v, and a tank commander for forfeit fodder. After that those guys never left the table. He came down with corran in ship,t hen jek in ship (not jek v though?) then han chewie falcon, none of those guys could get around tarkin cancelling one destiny and making the other -3. I, however, couldnt get through all his forfeit fodder before he had mace at one site with a saber and then quigon at another site with his saber. some how ben kenobi (old school) was able to clear a tank off a site with a 6 BD and he had 3 sites to my one site. so he was retrieving 3 with celebration while i was pinging for 1 (yes occupation and celebration were on the saem system. I had arica blocking one drain and then moved to block quigon’s with a tank and cannon. he battled me there and i defensive fired that motherfuckero ff the table and moved in front of ben kenobi. eventually i cleared him off the site and the system so he only had mace out who’s drain was blocked and my drains/occupation damage was just too much for him to handle when I could recycle a 5, activate to it and make my drains +1 with watto (outskirts drain for 3 ftw). This dude played super slow and at one point had no hand, had to take 5 damage, and sat there thinking for like 2 minutes before losing the force and it was kind of pissing me off but a full win by 13 was fine with me after it looked like i was going to take a loss.
fw 4+36

Game 3, my Tatooine Tanks vs. Vikram Bali’s TRM

So he goes first and I start imp decree and i get nice activations from him after he revos my bridge. I drop tank commander gun watto to the jyard and he comes down with leia, blaster, lando screaming and epp luke for backup. he plays flash adn shows a 3 so he can’t hit the tank. then he battles and tries to shoot and play BP to add 3 to hit the tank but he had zero force so he couldnt shoot, and i had watto so he couldnt battle. I drew 2 destiny and it kept leia around. I dropped epp maul on my turn but was so focusing on not shooting him lost that i forgot to swing and overflowed leia for 18 instead of 25 because i wouldve easily hit her with the destiny i’d drawn. after that there wasn’t much he could do, he came down with some other dudes and I’m pretty sure I battled them off and won another game by 25.
FW 6+63

Justin and I are both 3-0 at this point so we have to play each other, which sucks but what can you do.

Game 4, my Profit vs his KTOD Huntdown

I don’t remember how I took the AC in this game but I’m pretty sure it was just the normal clash+satm/bp that did it. He stupidly played the reactor terminal shield bc he thought it was restricted access, though I pointed this out before I dropped a free luke on him and blew him out (I did play my threepio for free though) that really cost him as it locked him into three shields and was unable to play coward to stop me from flipping at will. After that I just held the AC and drained while projectioning his site. This game is seriously blending together with the game we played in the… SPOILER ALERT (final)… but it was a total grind but I was able to win by 3 forces.

So now becuase Justin’s diff is still so high and i’m the only 4-0 we have to play again.

Game 5, my Tat Tanks vs. Justins WYS

I got a shit hand for space and resigned to just go up there and cloak with maul. I set up watto/tank turn 1 and emperor to the farm turn 2. Turn 3 I ripped occupation with watto so instead of draining just went upstairs and cloaked ashe was there doing fast damage to me trying to put pressure on. After losing vader v off the top he went over to kessel knowing it’d be tough for me to take a system. I did end up challenging at tatooine for a bit with boba fett and bossk in ship but it was short lived and at best held me from cloaking for a couple turns but in the end it was I who got shield busted and unable to play code clearance allowing him to edge twice for 5 each and in the end He was able to win by 13.

So justin and I are both 5 and 1 and need to win to get into the final. I think justin couldve gotten in with a small loss but after seeing taco bill’s diff when I sat down across from him for game 6 I knew I had to win and I was a little bit worried about his BHBM

Game 6, my Profit vs. Taco Bill’s BHBM

Bill started arica, dr.e then backed upw ith emperor and vader. I stacked up at the exterior site but he started IAO so I couldn’t nabrun in. I eventually dropped yoda and il9 to the AC and moved obi, boussh, corran, artoo BLD V and threepio inside. right away he zaps threepio. during his turn he zaps artoo. and drops p59. at this point he can zap on my turn and prevent DFTD so i wokling artoo back and redploy him on my turn. he zaps him again (so he doesnt have to lose p59 with the new BLD text) but I still have il9 to use with DFTD. I have no other guys in hand so i just battle with what i have. I swing and hit vader and satm/bp him to free luke, I bounce boba fett. I swing and hit p59 and then he force fields my final swing at emperor. His force fielding allowed me to play both gift and rebel leadership to draw 4 destiny and I clear the site and do one overflow (would’ve been four more overflow but i forgot about luke’s ultimatum v).

I free han and eventually spread out to two sites to increase the damage. he puts the <> dbay at tatooine with vader emperor janus and I move luke over to try and ping him for a bit. He decides to emperor zap luke on my turn so that I lose 3 for his objective. this works once and then I stop giving him luke. In the end my damage was just more than his with two drains of 2 and a ping of two, two his drain at the dbay that is projectioned and his drain of 2 at fondor with maul and presence there and I win by some forces.

finish 5-1, 10+66

Justin and I are beat and starving so instead of playing the final at the shop we head to brooklyn to the pizza shop of one of my closest/oldest friends who owns one there. we get some free slices (i had macaroni, cheese, bacon, ranch and a buffalo chicken bacon ranch, justin had the mac attack and an eggplant parm. chu went with buffalo ranch and a vegan choice I believe) then we headed back to Chu’s to play the final with chu as the referee.

Justin won so he elected to play dark first so that he could work on retrieving with the wys I suppose.

Our game was very similar to the first only this time he put vader outside turn one. on my turn 1 i came down with obi saber and cleared him off. Next turn I backed up with boussh but i left her undercover after he put 4lom down in the ac and drew. He came down with maul and killed obi I saved the saber and resilianced obi. Then I went into the AC and cleared it pretty easily and he dropped emperor outside and force lightning’d leia. I freed han and replayed her the next turn after I buried FL. Differently than our swiss game when I cancelled visage the first turn, we lost to visage every turn in this game and I elected not to cancel it because of his retrieval with wipe and my getting a head by leaving his image of the dark lord stuck outside when iw as inside draining for four and pinging for one. he went to space with zuckuss and eventually the back door with sidious and someone. My damage was just too much for him in the end and though I forgot to retrieve with wokling I was able to win by 6.

Our tanks/wys game was a little different. he was actually able to get both projections out against me (he didnt get either in the swiss game) and spread out to kessel as soon as I got my occupation/cloak going. he moved out there with just dash though and so I went down with bossk/zuckuss ins hips and overflowed him for 9 since he elected to keep dash out to stay flipped. Unluckily for me he drew high and I stupidly didnt put the forfeit 7 tank on the hounds tooth for fodder with really i think cost me hugely. He eventually cleared me off kessel but was only doing the damage there as he couldnt get a ground force together. he eventually got to the cantina and would’ve ended the game with the extra damage had I not drawn one card and it been u3po, but he blocked the drain, forcing justin’s squad to move outside. I think if i just moved u3po with them I mightve won by moving a commander to the cantina and doing some other movement but as is, justin was down to five cards, I drew two and cloaked maul from reserve deck FTL and with justin forgetting to retrieve with wokling also (he beat me by 5) it could’ve been a freaking tie. and we forgot to count lost piles.

So six years after losing coruscant regionals by 1 force I win them by one force, both times playing the bravo fighter.

So I get my third tournament win and my first glass trophy that I can’t drink out of.

Touting Polarhaven – My Favorite SWCCG Site

I came across a rare humility in the SWCCG world this morning. And while I respect humility above most other personailty traits, this case really pissed me off- but only because I want this person to get some recognition.

I know I’ve lauded this guy’s site before. He gets the new virtual sets entered before you can download them for swip. He has full card images with text for every card out there. He’s got an easy-to-remember, easy-to-use website. And what most impressed me about this guy’s site is that he’s now gone mobile on us, which is pretty fucking bad ass.

Now I was having trouble with the forum search function this morning, so I can’t see if there are any threads dedicated to this site or the guy who runs it, but that just adds to the reason why I wrote this.

swccg.polarhaven.net/m is already my pick for website of the year; think of how it’s going to change how we access cards.

- I no longer have to take a laptop on every trip to have SWIP readily available.

- As the website says, I can be sitting on the floor in the living room playing a game and look up texts. Hell, that would’ve come in handy all day yesterday because justin’s computer’s power settings are set to power down every 5 minutes of non-use and his log in code is a bitch to get the thing back on.

- At the Y4 Regionals two weekends ago, steve and I would’ve realized that Location Location Location V didn’t pull war rooms before we GOT TO THE TOURNAMENT to cut up the slips, which left us scrambling to take the ROC combo out of our Huntdowns minutes before the tourney.

- The best brainstorming sessions the KTOD ever has is on the way back from a big tournament. Now I can be in the car driving looking up texts on my phone, or on the plane taxiing checking which admiral’s orders I’d want to play in my AITC Corellians deck. Paolo Reshad FTW.

And there is a meticulous attention to detail in the card screen. If I’m on my way to an episode I tournament, I can check to see if it’s allowed in the format, because polarhaven.net/m lets you know.

2008 Yavin IV Regional Tournament Report

Several things lead to my disappearance from the PC Message Boards. I think I’ve spoken about it before so I wont reiterate much here, but a lot of it had to do with burnout. I spent a ton of time on V15 only to have it knocked over new starting effects. Competitive balanace began to dominate conversation and that bored the shit out of me. Then the MPC happened and I didn’t go very far, followed by the shit with Dinelle and I had just had enough.

Between the MPC and Y4 Regional I only picked up cards once, for a local, and played mystril and an eh version of farming with Luke’s skyhopper.

Going into the Y4 regional, steve and Justin spent a weekend testing but I was in NYC visiting a friend and couldn’t play. H2o came in the wednesday before we left to get some games and hang out and despite my despondence from the game, I played really well. I was intuitive and instinctive and most of my game plans just worked. My normally less than stellar deckbuilds were running fine and I was feeling really good about a lot of my card choices.

I decided on huntdown for dark pretty early despite messing around with tanks some. I think tanks are super strong and we had some really neato ideas about different ways to run them but we always came back to the same problem: activation. Tanks just suck ass at activating unless you do IAO/Mob Points start, and then you can’t start droid racks AND combat response and that’s just janky.

I had no confidence in huntdown beating light senate even though justin thought it was fine (as evidence, Justin demolished the guy at the y4 regional playing light senate who also demoilshed me with the same deck). And I was even worried about Huntdown beating profit (though I luckily avoided having to play it all day).

Funny/embarassing story: we’re driving down to the great state of maryland and come up with the ROC combo to beat senate and profit and think it’s the bomb. I labored over the decision to play the combo over a more solid version of HD all night and into the morning and decided on playing it. Until we got to the tournament, cut out location location location and read that it doesn’t let you deploy warrooms. We is retarded.

For light I knew I was going to run WYS though not the spies version I had been playing. It’s a list Tom Hollingsworth gave us and I tweaked some. It starts Wokling, Squadass and We Didn’t hit it, which lets you activate +1 at systems you control; it’s not that huge of a card, but it’s pretty good. I’m not completely sold that it’s better than I must be allowed to speak V with a farm, or even without the farm, but oh well.

One note to Tom: Thanks for convincing us that Old ben is a good card, but you almost ass-fucked me by telling justin it let you survive force lightning, choke and other removed from battle tactics. It doesnt. It only works on forfeited dudes. I would’ve tripped you down some stairs if I had gone for a beatdown on the gemmeperor and been assfucked by that card.

The trip down was pretty uneventful save the revelation of tech and tech yet to come, that I choose not to discuss. We got into the hotel around 330am due to justin getting stuck in major traffic coming out of boston in the pouring rain.

I will say this about the brand new La Quinta hotel in edgweood MD, it’s fucking sick. It just opened, we got our room for 80 a night with the AAA discount (regular 89 per night). It had two double beds, a pull out couch, a big fridge, microwave, flat screen AND complimentary breakfast. Fucking bomb. The KTOD has had a longstanding tradition of staying at courtyard marriotts, originally due to the fact that I worked for them and got sick discounts and then of the dope pool area. The only thing this hotel is missing is a pool/hot tub combo, which the courtyard has on lockdown– this situation is akin to Chic-Fil-A vs. every other chicken chain. Chic Fil A would take everyone down if it were simply open on sundays and offered free refills. Bastards.

After the Location V debacle and getting our dark decks straightened out we decided to run Wipe them out all of them V for profit hate and imperial justice for profit/senate hate. Me Justin and Steve all ran the same list, card for card. For light I ran wys, justin ran profit though I think he only ran 2 warrooms, and steve ran hidden base. Andy ran Mystril and Profit, though he and Justin played different lists.

Game 1, my WYS vs. Mighty Joe Young’s Hunt Down Duelling

I didn’t even realize that Joe started Epic Duel, but when I did I was glad he had 4-10 cards in his deck that could do nothing to me whatsoever. The only thing I worried about was Lord Vader coming down.

Early on I went to Tatooine system with luke and drew for my atst and admirals orders. He came down with Lord Vader to the cantina and I was pissed, but on second look it was Lord Vader V, so I paid 3 grabbed Fury and that was about game. I could never find Trans Term (all day in fact) but I was able to get luke into the atst with considerable backup, retreived a bunch with him and Edge, while draining at kessel with Dash and eventually tatooine. I don’t remember much happening in this first game except drains and retrieval and I took it pretty easily by 24.

Game 2, my HD vs. Chris Westergard’s WYS

He started I must be allowed to speak and I started first strike, Establish Control and I can’t remember what. Maybe no escape, I don’t think it was abililty V though I like that card because of all the battling you do. I had Vader turn 1 and went down to the docking bay to get some extra activation going, then backed him up with emperor pretty soon then drew up for space and emperor’s power. he went to space with just dash on his second turn and I came down with Zuckuss and 4lom and lit him up on my fourth after he gave me kessel and I could draw up for space. He didn’t save a force to be able to play moving into attack position and with two destinies I took dash out easy. He came down to fight zuckuss later with Booster and Melas but didnt play MIAP because he thought it didnt work without a correllian there. My destiny ended up taking them out and I think he drew a 2 making me only lose 4-lom. Him taking visage damage all game, the drain at the dbay and space and emperor’s power was pretty devastating and I ended up winning by 29.

4 (+53)

So now I’m sitting in first and have to face my nemesis Brad Eier.

Now Brad has had my number since the MPC two years ago when I got bored, lost focus against his rops and let my obi wan get beat down by 29 force late in the game that I wouldve clearly won, yet lost by 9 when he reacted with a bunch of walkers from 7 sites. Keep that in mind.

My WYS vs. Brad Eier’s Imperial Entanglements

Justin had just seen this deck so he told me that it plays tons of deserts and tatooine sites and drops guys at each to drain and ping. This is kind of bad for wys because it doesnt play a lot of guys and only 2 of those guys draw destiny on their own, which when you think about it, is pretty bad.

I went to kessel early and started retreiving with luke. then I went down with a stacked chewie’s atst to a drain of 2 site for me and then melas to the cantina. He dropped tons of guys on the devastator and shuttle them down to drain/ping. I moved to block his drains as best I could and drew up for an admirals order every turn (i run 4) to get his commander ping AO off the table. He let me have the kessel/cantina drains for a long time and I refused to fight him for fear of reacting, though after the game i realized that he really had no power. This was driven home when against justin in the finals brad dropped like 6 guys and 2 walkesr against a lone chewie and was only 15 power.

I got weapon’s display out and that only added to my retrieval, I even got a nice edge off. The big problem here was mirax. I couldn’t find her, and I couldnt get her with the pulsar skate because I decided to try out booster. If i had been able to loop my we’re doomed for the last three turns of the game, or even it could be worse, I think I win no problem, but no mirax = no win for me and I lost by 8.

4(+45)

Game 4, my HD vs. Charles Clarkson’s LS Senate

First thing first, I flipped over my first card to put on imperial justice: Endor:backdoor. That spelled about game over for me and thusly, it came to pass. for the first five or so turns I just drew up with nowhere to go and waitedf or him to play senators. He waited until he dropped 3 and I went down with Vader to get the back door off justice. I eventually dropped Vader to the back door with some backup but he came down with Epps about 7 turns in a row and beat down whoever I put there. Late game I tried to get anything going by putting zuckuss at the system but it didnt matter. Without being able to get to teh back door and set up early while he had to pay for his expensive senators, I was pretty fucked and was damn lucky to only have lost by 16 forces.

4(+29)

I’m pretty bummed out now. I just have shit luck. That happened. Twice this day I went for fondor with establish control and it was activated. Twice I went for kessel for my free search this day and it was activated. I just have shit luck. I need to win my last 2 to have a shot at the final four so I get back to work.

Game 5, my HD vs. Wojchek Jankowski’s HBX

Justin played this guy earlier in the day and won when he luckily probed this guy’s hidden base on the last turn. If justin hadn’t probed, he would’ve lost… to a guy who got a free first round bye because he didnt come with decks put together… to a guy who was just starting to fill out his decklist when I sat down across from him in game 5…

from a guy who put out the three effects he would start with HFTMF before I put mine out… one of which was Your Inishgt Serves you well. Somehow the guy was shocked when I started no escape.

Justin was shocked I won this game so handily but I went to the back door with vader turn 1, emperor and janus turn 2 and emperor’s power soon after. he never cancelled visage. He could never cancel my drain on account of bane malar. I probed him on the second try and he had to lose 7. I battled him three or four times in space retreiving 2 every time (with ability V and first strike) and he only ever drained me with dinky 1 drains at systems. He never came to fight me and I simply didnt draw once I had my shit set up and I won by 20.

6 (+49)

At this point my diff is actually pretty good considering I had two losses. I felt pretty confident that a win would get me in, especially a good sized win. I faced Charles, the guy who beat me earlier.

Game 6, my WYS vs. Charles Clarkson’s HD

So this guy looked like he was playing justin’s decks from the MPC nearly card for card, but definitely in concept. He started conduct for blast door when I had a barrier earliy and that worried me a little. I tried to go to space with dash early but he was missing and I had to pull rayc, and back him up with Talon. Even though if zuckuss came down i wouldnt’ draw destiny, even if he had 4lom, with those two guys he’s not going to hurt me two bad because the forfeit is so huge.

He went to the cantina with DVDLOTS and Emperor and I dropped a fury on him, which he was ready for by starting decree V. I set up luke in space at tatooine while i got my atst stuff ready, backed him up with han in falcon and eventually landed them to put them in the atst. I couldn’t find combine fleet action to protect them vs. i have you now (he started crush) but I also couldn’t find a trans term so I had to press on fast and let visage take us both out. He tried pretty hard to get me at the docking bay with sidous, maul and others but I was always able to keep luke out and retor han, while draining at kessel.

Eventually I got the docking bay on lockdown and he came down with zuckuss and only drew enough to kill one guy on the outrider who I retorted. After I was able to get enough shit going in my hand, I was able to get the falcon back up to space, and through shipdocking, get dash on the outrider and fan out. Zuckuss was no match and eventually died. I wore him down with drains and retreival whereas he only had the cantina drain which was handled by it could be worse and control most of the time. He could’ve limited me at the end of the game, but he knew his diff was too low to get past me and spared me not getting in on his own accord, which was cool of him. I ended up winning by 15.

So that gets me in in fourth which works out since justin was second and we wouldn’t have to play in the finals. I got a tat pack, a theed palace pack a premiere pack and an Se pack. I pulled an after her and some junk.

So I face top seed brad eier in the finals and it’s about the worst i’ve ever played.

Entirely meaningful bonus game #1

Brad decided to play light first and It was a pretty chesmatchish game. I went down to the backdoor with vader super early followed by emperor bane and eventually janus. He altered my emperor’s power pretty early which was huge. But not as huge as me dropping maul and much anger in front of lando and forgetting that cloak was in the move phase. I glanced down at the card and saw ‘end of turn’ and just decided to be an absolute bonehead. He simply battled with lando and i drew destiny because I didn’t have another maul and got effed. Stupid me.

Image at the audience chamber was huge and kept me in the game. I was able to get some big drains in but late had to block his drains in space. His decision not to flip til late was a good one as he just plinked me with small drains. at one point I decided to move zuckuss in front of luke due to his small hand and hoped he didnt have anything. He did and I had to lose zuckuss and 9 which was unfortunate.

Preface: There needs to be an “I really have to poop” mood.

I ended up losing the game by 2 which would’ve been a win had i not forgotten how to cloak maul and even maybe if i didnt let zuckuss get beat down so easily.

Entirely meaningful bonus game #2

I’m already a little shook because of my shit play in the first game, but when my hand of 7 red cards and an xwing cannon revealed itself in the second game, and then proceded to draw up. I was able to get dash to kessel early but after thatn I could only get both hans, none of my tunnel visions and at it’s worst I had 20 red cards in my hand and two characters, both han. Eventually I got a tunnel vision and I ripped it twice for a chewie and an atst, but i was so on tilt at this point i put them at the judland wastes and instead of drawing 4 destiny i got zero. that pretty much cemented the game right there. Though I never got luke out, never got to retreive anything, I only lost by 6. I also played horrible, especially the turn I battled when I tried to play a second interrupt from lost pile, when i played two controls though control was grabbed.

After I drew 11 cards in a row, 10 red and 1 han (who i already had in hand) i was about done mentally and couldn’t hang on. The only solace I can take is that it was only an extra 50 bucks to add to the pool, though it resulted in us getting home about 2 hours later.

Yeah that’s about it. That took a while and I don’t feel like writing anymore, maybe i’ll post up other thoughts later.

KTOD Profit – The Told Story

There has been some ballyhoo over the KTOD profit deck that Steve ran at the MPC and I ran at PA States. So I’m going to break it down for everyone since that’s what I like to do with this blog but haven’t been able to do for some time what with a lack of events and new decks ran by the KTOD and more specificalyl me.

Since I actually had a pretty large hand in building this deck I have some good insigh into how everything came about and thusly changed over the course of the last few months when Steve decided to Lock In to it and play the profit at worlds.

It was over the summer. I wasn’t working (mostly by choice) and steve, justin and I made frequent trips down cape cod to chill at the beach and my parent’s cape house to play some cards and catan and all in all , relax. One night it was just steve and I heading down to the cape and it’s like an hour and a half drive so we got to talking.

We were thinking of new light decks. I had been running Hyperdrive with Don’t Forget the Droids V and we began to really sense that this card is certainly more powerful than it is goofy and surely there is another, better platform to run that strategy off of. A platform that doesn’t start with a three card hand and doesn’t struggle to put guys on the table. Both of us had, within the past week, been thinking about profit and the ideas came flooding out of us on the drive.

Seeking pulls 3po and r2 cheap for DFTDV. It also pulls good cheap guys. We could play destiny adders, two of each and depending on which adder was in your hand, you could pull that guy with seeking. Rebel leadership V with Obi Wan V8 is amazing, between that and DFTDV we should win every battle. Han’s blaster is br0ken! – were just some of the things we exclaimed while steve dug through boxes while we drove down to the cape. Of course, with 3 boxes of cards open and a ton of cards in his lap, we get pulled over by a cop because I had an expired registration on my license plate.

So the cop comes up to the window and is like “are those star wars cards?” And we were like uhhh, yeah. “I have a friend that collects those he makes a ton of money off them.” I had the correct sticker in my car I had just failed to put it on the plate, so the cop let us go and we were back to the wide world of profit.

We tried some different things in the original build and tweaked some things after each game. Tanks was very big in our area when we built this and we wanted things to help vs. that. A gift seemed awesome because of the -1 drain as much as the undercover spyness. We originally only liked one V8 obi wan until we saw the true power of Rebel Leadership V. We also quickly discovered that Han’s Blaster was kinda shitty and scrapped that pretty quick.

Here’s the original list that I played at the State Championship in Philadelphia, the first event that the deck was played in (and it ran up aganist tanks twice, which is pretty much why I shelved it following the event). Anyway, here’s the list with some more explanation/breakdown/cardchoices after.

Inconsequential Barriers

Destiny in the deck isn’t bad but there are a lot of 1′s. Brian Fred turned me on to Jedi Lev V so I threw that in and really like it. Plus it’s another way to get han/anybody back when you’ve already blown seeking. Nabrun was a given. Entrenchment was there for Agents/alien protection, taking advantage of blaster proficiency V, luke’s game text, etc. Padme was in there for more damage, projections were in there to limit damage off planet (again mostly for tanks off endor).

One of the main drawbacks of the deck is that there are only seven different characters to go battle with. So you really have to have a good balance of protecting han, going and fighting, or spreading out. Resliance and Jedi Lev and Seeking V certainly help though.

Once tanks faltered at worlds, we started looking at this deck once again. We realized teh Rug hugs weren’t that good and lowered the destiny, so we put another Gift in. The gift was especially good when they made the new Yoda V who is absolutely a bomb in this deck and he went in for the quigons and we made room for one more saber, which, with it’s four destiny is rpetty damn good.

Something that really screwed me against tanks was their ability to start Arica. If you couldn’t find your blaster proficiency or if you could and they cancelled it with Cease Fire, they eliminated a drain of 2-3 for most if not all of the game, so A Padme had to come out for a corran horn, who also helped you set up a beatdown if arica was stranded there and couldn’t get off planet.

I hadn’t ever looked at steve’s list til just this moment but the changes are actually extremely slight from his list and mine. I’m looking at his day 1 deck for the MPC. I know the day 2 deck had some differences because of meta calls going into a final confrontation style matchup, but I’ll note the changes and make the final list.

He put in scrambled transmission V for the Escape pod and put in A second Gift of the Mentor and a second I Don’t need their scum either V for the two rug hugs.

The most major/subtle change to the deck happened the morning of the MPC. We’d been running an Unusual amount of Fear because of all the pulls this deck uses at the start of the game. But While I was in the shower, I decided to tell steve that I was running a tatooine system in my senate and that he should play Planetary Defenses or else he would auto lose to me. Since he really couldnt fit all the shields under Fear he decided to go with Drop, which really worked a lot better for the deck, you just have to be a little more economical with your pulls early on but all in all he said it was a great improvement.

The most profound impact was cleary yoda V. cheap immunity main with a dope weapon of destiny 4 and a dope gametext. this guy was a huge addition and what made this deck shoot up to tier 1 for sure. To clear up a spot for this, he took out the 2 qui gons and the we’re doomed for 2 yoda’s and his saber.

so the MPC list looked like this:

Profit/Destroyed

So the game plan is to drop a quick beatdown against their aliens if they put them down. In testing when Agents starts lando/random alien, and drops emperor first turn you’re still able to get off a beat down with a free luke and whoever, bounce an alien, hopefully blaster proficiency or clash someone, and clear the audience chamber. If you’ve got destiny adders the possibilities are endless. It’s tough to not be able to clear this out, you really need to not get a luke to do this since the whole deck revolves around him, but it’s not that hard to do massive overflow especially if you can get a DFTD V off too.

Tanks is still a tough matchup for the deck because it does so much damage. You’ll usually have to go fight them off a site. Rebel leadership V works almost as good as DFTD and Anakin’s saber can deflect blasts from the tank cannons as well. You’ll wanna go in there with destiny adders, but they can’t have the assault leader at both sites so go where he isn’t. You just have to watch out for outflanked or have yoda ready if they play it.

Most matchups play the same, you try and maximize your drains and control both tatooine sites and get the ping going. If you end up in a battle, chances are you can end the game right there. I only had problems fighting A DS deck similar to the profit, with massive character elimination in Drew Scott’s BHBM that can capture luke, you are beaten and dark strike guys. He was able to overflow me for a decent amount twice and I still ended up winning the game by a narrow margin.

Steve really doesn’t like entrenchment and rarely uses it, not wanting to pay three to get it and also citing that people rarely come and fight him at the audience chamber. I know on day 2 he ran an escape pod and a grimtash. The grimtash is mainly a joke b/c chu knows we never, ever play that card so he will often draw up against us to get what he needs and it was a good meta call though I don’t know I’d throw it in there. I like we’re doomed. I think it’s too good in close matchups i/e fear and other damage races that can really really win you the game.

The deck is really solid. Another suggestion would bea third rebel leadership since you always throw the first one to getting a war room. Otherwise try it out. I think you’ll see the true power of don’t forget the droids and just having a droid at each site is pretty bomb. If you happen to get r2 at a scomp link his text is awesome AND he’s heroic, so even if you don’t have the DFTD they have to swing at r2d2.

So post up some commentary, let me know what you think what you’d change and if you play it especially.

gemmesizzle, bobby sapphire, out.

KTOD vs. T.O. Grudge Match!

A few weeks ago, Team Ohio posted on one of the MPC threads that to train for worlds they bought a bunch of OTSDs and got back to the basics; basic combos, basic force draining, basic everything with the four packs of premiere, one A new Hope pack, and the fixed premium cards balancing out the bombs like it’s worse and elis/nabrun.

One of the favorite pasttimes of the KTOD is OTSD playing, often times throughout our vs. career and before, Justin and I picked up OTSD really cheap at cons or online and duked it out OTSD style. Truth be told, I beat him more often than not (I did pull vader AND tarkin once), but that would prove to be some noice training for our grudge match with Team Ohio.

After seeing Eier’s post, I shot him a PM about having a grudge match and maybe putting some money on the line. We didn’t end up putting cash up (hell, team ohio didn’t even pay me for the two otsd’s I bought them!!), but we did have stakes: The losers had to wear the winner’s clothes for a tournament round. This would be funny either way because either eier/booker who are larger than us would be wearing tight, tiny clothes, or justin and I would have huge t-shirts on that are a few sizes too big for us. Hilarity!

So I’m going to analyze my card pool and go through my deck progression, just for fun, and do a mini tournament report featuring one game against the bane of my star wars card existance: Brad Eier.

We ordered the OTSDs from Wholesalegaming.com, decipher’s main distributor, I found them cheap on that site. Cheaper than cat1, which also only sends you jabba boxes when you buy OTSDs from them. I really want a new boba fett, so I took a chance on wholesalegaming.com. We planned on doing this all saturday night, but we got REALLY bored on friday waiting for people to show up and run the EJP tournament, so we decided to open, sort and start deckbuilding friday night.

Justin and I sat at a table on one side of the room and TO sat across the room directly to our left and we busted our boxes. We all ripped Luke boxes, which actually look pretty mint. I used a luke box when I won origins in ’02 and had no luck with them since. I used Leia at worlds ’03 and top eighted, and boba fett in 07 when I hit the top 8 again. The real commodity here is box BOTTOMs which get wrecked pretty easily and two shiny new ones are dope.

Okay so here’s the original pool:

My card pool was pretty rough, I got really bad rares and one good character in Boshek. Dark is way stronger than light in space in this format, but I had nobody to hang on the ground, so I knew going into this that I was just going to try and lose by as little as possible and try to win some key battles.

I decided to use Kashyyyk as my starting local, knowing that if he didn’t have it I’d have a huge advantage, and if we starting local bounced, I had the war room as a solid backup. To round out the locals I used tatooine (for it’s a hit), kessel (for the drain) and corulag (for the 2 icons, -1 drain), the aforementioned war room, Judland wastes and Mos Eisley. I chose mos Eisley over the moisture farm because of the darkside moisture farm gametext, even though the farm has a scomp link for r2d2 AND How did we get into this mess.

My original idea was to use all the droids and forced services to handle big drains. 5 droids all with good destiny (except cz3 which just has noice game text), how did we get into this mess and forced services seemed liek a solid idea. R2D2 + Fire Extinguisher is just too good so that was obviously the first two cards I put in the deck. I also threw in the vaporator for the judland waste drain of 3 combo.

Because I went with mostly systems I decided to put in every ship I had, even those shitty Z-95s. Even though they have no hyperspeed, I figured with all the systems and 2 hyper escapes I could make the most of the other ships and use the z95s if I absolutely had to.

As for characters I had to play basically everything I had that was remotely decent. THe Rebel Trooper guard would’ve made the cut if he was a warrior, but I only wanted to play a few rebels because of Solo han. I threw the warrior’s courage in there even though I only had four warriors (two of which were the same unique card). Rebel Techs, the Jawa and Beru didn’t make it either.

I played zero effects. I had beggar in the original list but TJ convinced me that it just cost too much and there’s just no reason for anyone to save force in this format other than to drop a beatdown and the chances of it all working out are just too slim. Though when Eier dropped the Dark Jedi Lightsaber on Chilsden for 6 I REALLY wanted that beggar.

Interrupts were basic, Hyper escape x2 liek I said, barrier, it’s a hit, solo han, it could be worse, and old ben. The good stuff.

Then I started talking with TJ and showed him my list. we both decided that the droids part of the deck just sucked. c3po blows, those other droids are doing nothing for me, and I should jsut run r2 and cz3 with the fire extinguisher, that cleared up 4 more slots for me to throw in bith shuffle, the rebel pilot, another system in corulag and the second it’s a hit. Here’s the final list:

TO decides to match me up with Brad because since the MPC last year brad has owned me. I had brad dead to rights, my combat vs. his rops when I got bored battled with Obi Wan and got beatdown for 20+ force. I ended up winning the next game vs. his dick hat but we tied and the tiebreaker was cards in lost pile and I lost. Eier also beat me at east nats and I’m 1-3 vs. him lifetime.

Eier starts Raltiir to my kashyyyk and first turn dropds lars moisture farm and prophetess and says go. I’ve got dick in my opening hand but I did rip R2 AND the fire extinguisher, so I draw up some cards and say go. He drains me and draws.

I drop r2 and the fire extinguisher and save force for boshek. He goes to kashyyyk and I drop a little beatsquad there and activate a force with R2 when he draws odd.

I end up dropping mos eisley and some dudes there and move r2 over to drain for 1 and move over to kessel to get some drains there. He ends up following me and some space battles ensue. It seems like he’s not getting a lot of space so I send an Xwing over to raltiir to even out the drain race while we battle at kessel. At one point I’m holding a barrier and he drops blast door controls to obsolete it. Boshek ends up owning space and never dies, and he is my beacon of light in this game. I’m still destined to lose but because of my raltiir drain I’ve really evened things up. I moved my guys over to the farm to block that drain of 2 and force him to battle the fire extinguisher which really slowed the game down for him. He ended up clearing off jek and evram lajerie and retrieving some force with prophetess, but the shistavven wolfman got some drains in at Mos Eisley and forced brad to move in front of him.

I end up relinquishing kessel and the drain of one for a drain at kashyyyk. At the end I had 3 cards left and not enough to do anything but i knew it could be worse was in there. I drew one card and it was the ICBW! so that saved me for a turn and I was able to drain for 2 more, only losing by 6. Justin beat booker by 21, so we had already won the ‘grudge match’ but I wanted to keep it close, especially after brad spent the first four turns draining for 2 at the farm, a giant chunk of my life force.

2007 MPC Tournament Report

I’ve got a ton to say about the MPC and while I’ll crosspost this on decktech for archival purposes, this will be the uncensored draft because th user agreement when you become a premium member on this site is that you can have a completely uncensored blog.

I really want to start with the Dinelle stuff because it’s been boiling my blood all day. On the way to work this morning I actually had to engage in some deep breathing to calm myself down because I really thought I should’ve lost my cool on Sunday. I’m sort of glad I didn’t because I don’t know what everyone would have thought about me losing it like that, I don’t even think justin and steve have seen me absolutely lose my shit over something but I was ready to snap in my game against Dinelle and thinking about it was driving me nuts.

So I’ll get to all that. But if I’m going to do it chronologically (and I am) It’s going to start with where Steve and I created the profit that wrecked house this weekend by steve on days 1 and 2, and by chu on day 2.

My parents have a house down cape cod and it’s pretty fun to go to the beach and play cards all day at a beach house, grab some drinks at night and chill outside in the cool, summer air. One of these summer days Steve and I decided to go down and just get games and Justin was thinking about meeting us but wasn’t sure yet. On the way down steve and I were just shooting the shit about cards and I was like “I think profit could be good, I’ve been thinking about it a lot.” And he said he was just looking at profit shit and we could probably make a solid one. I wanted to use rebel leadership as an activation platform with don’t forget the droids since seeking pulled r2 and 3p0 and made them cheap. He wanted to use destiny adders like Rug Hug, Skywalkers and Gift of the Mentor and deploy with seeking the guy corresponding to the adders in your hand. So we went to work right there.

Steve was pulling cards out and had two long boxes open with cards in the door tray, the middle tray and all over his lap when we saw the blue lights flashing behind us. I didn’t think I was speeding but when decks are being built in the car I RARELY look at the road, let alone the spedomitor, so who knows. I pull over and obviously steve can’t just put away a ton of cards so the cop asks for my shit and then goes “are those starwars cards? My buddy collects those things and sells stuff like that on ebay for a ton of money.” Turns out my registration was expired or something stupid that I can’t even understand how the cop saw it and let us go.

We put that shit together and it ran pretty well. There were some incarnations of it and maybe I’ll do a blog entry about the progression in my normal style, but that day is not today. I played the deck at PA States and it went 2-1 losing to tanks by 1. It has some problems with tanks but there was no Yoda MOF V out then either which made this deck infinitely better.

So summer went by, into worlds, Profit was good but we were expecting a lot of tanks so I shelved the deck in favor of WYS Spies which doesn’t have any autolosses and doesn’t have too many auto wins (though combat is up there). I took this deck to the top 8 of worlds, switched to combat and got wtfpwned by tom hollingworth in the day 3 play but still earned a lot of money on the weekend splitting 1/2/5th with Chu and Justin.

Now going into the MPC I knew profit with Yoda was very strong, but one of the things we in the KTOD preach is the advantage being “locked into” a deck can bring you, and I was locked into WYS spies even though the diffs are reasonably low.

For dark the only thing that really worried me about playing senate was combat and we came up with sick tech for that, which was Jonus/Scimitar 2/proton bombs to bomb one of the Core sites and limit them to just one drain rather than 2, eliminates retreival, etc. So I thought that was a good choice. One thing I overlooked, which the KTOD overlooked against worlds and I forgot about, was savrip, and it ended up blowing me out.

Not alot to say about the rest of the preparation going into the MPC. However, the guys running the event did ask for an official KTOD ranking list to help determine what players should be ranked.

We had Baroni 6th. ’nuff said.

We dropped off our decklists and then went to Ihop on saturday morning. I had a huge breakfast and by the time we got to the event I had to take a monster dump. I HATE taking dumps in public bathrooms ESPECIALLY gamer store bathrooms. But I thought it had to be done, so I took off my coat, sweater and watch, brought my water with me and stood in the bathroom staring at the toilet seat saying “you can do this, you can do this” but in th end, I couldn’t and I decided to hold it in knowing that it would hurt really bad when I finally moved it. So the whole day I really had to shit and that didn’t help my playing at all.

I did work on some sweet tech for the wys spies and let me tell you about it.

Rendevous point came out for visored vision (so good, it’s better than a grabber).

Flash of insight V came out for corellian retort V, way better than found someone you have, how did I not play this before.

Theron Nett came out for Rayc Ryjerd V. same d/f (2/4) adds 3 to power though and a matching pilot for any of my ships and also not targettable by much anger in him.

Moving to attack position went in there for red 10, which means i’m only playing 4 ships but it hasn’t been a problem for the deck so far.

Yaeger beat shwartz in the first round and would face me. I didn’t know a lot about Shwartz but he beat me in the team tourney and that worried me a slight bit until Yaeger sat down across from me with Dark Senate.

Round 2, Game 1: My WYS Nightfall w/ Undercover vs. Yaeger’s Dark Senate

Yaeger started Combat Response, First strike and Crossfire but also started Naboo, which was his downfall. Normally against Senate I just draw up and wait for them to go to space and try and win the giant space battle. But with a second system being out, this meant that I could go elsewhere. He deployed saber 1 with a cannon, guri on the stinger and zuckuss to tatooine early. So I went out with Han in the falon to Naboo, and then dropped Dash in ship to Kessel and said go, not thinknig he had very much else to use. I was also holding retort V and moving into attack position and dropped capital support V that turn too. Next turn I backed han up with luke and melas with dash. There was some draining going on, I sabotaged his Saber cannon though I didn’t go to tatooine ever. He decided to come at me with Guri and zuckuss at naboo against luke and han limiting me to one destiny, so I played chasm and darkligthered the first and drew okay on the second. We pretty much went back and forth at naboo for a few turns and I eventually burned all his guys out because I got to play moving into attack position on two consecutive battles and got to place 3 shields out of play to make luke immune in two consecutive battles. Between that and some well timed retrieval kessel drains once he ran out of senators I ended up winning by 22.

Round 2, Game 1: My DS Senate vs. Yaeger’s Profit.

Now I had profit tech because I knew steve was playing it and that senate couldn’t be it the way we had been playing it. Simple fix, I put in the tatooine system, not for the proton bombs (because any profit player worth their salt is playing planetary defenses, though baroni wasn’t going to until that morning when I told him to play it because i put in the second system). So I start tatooine instead of naboo and turn 1 i have jonus in my hand and instead of going to the senate I decide to drop jonus and the bombs to tatooine turn one. Of course he had the shield but I did get excited for a second there.

I went to the senate next with lott dodd and some dudes. Stupid thing is, he gave me goo nee tay and I forgot my senators were immune and this was pretty pivotal. He drained me early on and I had to lose 2, I didn’t want him to know that I was never coming to fight him, so I lost begin landing your troops from hand and decided to lose one from the top, which should be fine as long as it wasn’t Ability Ability Ability. Of course it was.

He started scrambled and the game plan is to not play the political effects until he flips and retreives and also to retreive them immediately (only the add to drain and drain cancel). But since I thought my senators were deploy +2 I had to do it fast and get two more senators down. So he killed both effects and there were two senators between them with ability on the bottom and I only had 3 senators at the senate. So I deployed 2 more for +4 force total, but he forgot to play aim high and I was able to get both effects AND ability back. I made him lose 4 more to cancel both those ffects, got Maul to tatooine and baron to Naboo (can’t play the aliens in space against profit in case of A gift) and won that game handily with my double space drain, along with baskol ping.

So that was a clinic on how to beat and play senate in two consecutive games. I felt good going into my next round, playing against Kyle who was running fear and TRM. My gameplan vs. Fear is to get capital support V out as early as I can at all costs… of course things never go to plan.

Round 3, game 1: my WYS Spies w/ Undercover vs. Kyle Krueger’s Fear V.

Things started out pretty bleak for me as I went to deckdive multiple times looking for capital support V in my force pile, but it was always in my deck even though I had a control/tunnel vision early. First turn was just a lot of drawing and I think I went to the ground early and he came in with Sidious and crossfire and killed a couple guys. I lost the pulsar skate early somehow and that never saw the light of day, meaning that I was fighting with just three ships, two of which I had to keep together (luke and his xwing protecting han and the toolkit from overwhelmed) with dash handling the duties elsewhere. So no capital support V and no set for stun canceller either and I thought I was in trouble. I was blocking two drains, had the hyper escape for beatdowns and wasn’t doing much damage on my own either.

We had some serious battles with me losing some guys and retorting them and kyle losing some ICSD’s. Eventually I went after Chirnaenoo to stop the big drains but he was still hitting me at the death star docking bay (I was out of guys to go fight merrijk) as well as in space. He got off one overwhelmed on dash pretty early but I grabbed it, and then when I killed the other one with visored vision. Also when he was trying to track a 5 for a set for stun I killed that with visored vision too, which was pretty hot. So once the overwhelmeds were gone I was able to move han in front of icsd’s to start blocking drains along with luke and dash when I got him back. He would move away and I would drain where I could and he was draining where he could. Later on there were some more battles that caused him to lose ships when he left ships in front of my guys and by the end my three ships were just better than his and he kept having to move away from my attack squads while I would move to block his drains. I also got Legendary off when I redeployed dash and a smuggler and that really killed him.

One pivotal moment I thought might lose me the game was when I couldn’t save a force to move with sidious from the cantina to the docking bay and I forgot to break lando’s cover to make my drains free plus giving me a cantina drain. Just that turn of no damage I thought would lose me the game, but some well placed we’re doomed, it’s a hit and controls really tightened the game up, I got some retreival in and eventually took the game by 6. If i couldve found capital support v at all I think I win this game by a LOT more.

Round 3, game 2: my DS Senate vs. Kyle’s TRM

So Kyle sat down and said that he hoped not to see dark senate but I think that was a lie. The dude played 3 lando’s and maybe 3 tantives. Turn one he just saved. He started civil dis so I couldn’t do much early. He went lando in tantiv turn 2 to naboo. Finally I got two senators down, he stacked a six on colo and then came down with Obi Wan and blew out both my senators. I had begin landing your troops and dropped tikkes and another guy, he throws down leia and OOPs tikkes which was huge because that meant he didnt have to lose to ability all game, or baskol. I threw out tatooine with jonus while I was fighting the tantive with Maul in ship. He got Savrip out super early and I had nothing for that so this game was going to be pretty fruitless from the beginning but I triedt o even it out. He dropped Quigon on the tantiv and drew 3 destiny against maul and then moved over to jonus. I didn’t have anything in my reserve deck for combat response so I threw zuckuss down on saber one to fight and lost jonus. while clearing out some of his guys because I lost the fight but maximized attrition. he moved the empty tantive back to naboo and restocked it on a later turn while dropping the 3/2 site, but with scimitar 2 at tatooine i was pretty fucked not being able to bomb it even if i could get a drain off. The game felt a lot closer than it was but in the end not having the colo shield or masterful move combo in my deck killed me and i got wtfpwned by 24.

So I’m out but I know I made it tough on kyle and steve said he was so exhausted from having to play me that he played awful vs. steve, forgetting to drain with his fear once and forgetting to make steve take fear damage on two different turns! So I feel like I contributed to that.

I don’t know how much of a chance I would’ve had vs. steve but it wouldve been close. the two space drains wouldve made that game end in single digits in either direction and if i can get han/toolkit out turn 1 vs agents and survive a turn 2 zuckuss I know I can make that a single digit game as well. Unfortunately I never got that chance but I had a feeling steve would come out of the bracket and he did, and I was proud of him.

While they were all playing their last round I went across the street to the bar with TJ and Ray Bordier to drink yingling and stare at the bartender’s perfect tittyballs and watch the skins/’hawks playoff game. Eventually we made it back to the hotel with gross chinese food, a handle of vodka, settlers of catan and I FINALLY go to take my massive shit in the privacy of my hotel room.

Next morning we worked on steve and justin’s decks. They both asked me for advice on card slots to make me feel better about losing as much as for my expertise in fitting in a card or two and it worked out for me and them. I made sure justin played the masterful combat AND fit in an ellis which turned out to be instrumental in his championship win. Also, we got an escape pod and a quite a mercenary into the profit for steve. I put my TIES together with inconsequental losses 5 and added a third tie cannon and second lateral damage so it would have more beatdown potential, which really paid off game 1 when I beatdown luke in space for 14 overflow when I faced hidden base xwings which is pretty much the second worst matchup for my TIES.

I don’t really want to talk much about the consolation. I didn’t even want to stick around for most of it but I wanted to try and contribute cash for my team who so graciously paid me for being part of the team.

Short of it: I lost with my wys spies finaly again. I was dumb and didn’t put the toolkit out before he got the free executor effect, that really boned me. But what boned me more is that this guy just stackeda ll his pilots under the executor lengthwise, so you couldnt see who was on it as he was flying it around the galaxy. Apparently Lando was on there and when i tracked a 7 for edge, I said 6 and he popped my luke off the board, killing 6 retreival and regular luke retreival for the rest of the game. I ended up losing by like 9 or so trying to avoid that executor and veers f’d me on the ground, as did lando, when i used HFTMF to pop his immunity he used lando to pop it back down.

I lost to Mike Richards with my Ties in the 5th round when i was 3-1. He was playng wys panic which ties just can’t touch. A theyre capital ships and b. you just can’t even battle them or hold the ground, so that sucked.

I beat booker’s Combat racing propoganda deck and that was really fun. He got pwned by fury and we had a really cool interchange. I was draining for 3 without fear at the cantna (after her) and kessel. He dropped his fifth propoganda, teh first non v on a kessel drain, and I sad control. He said brief loss of control, i paid 10 and said it could be worse, he paid one and said it’s worse, and finally i said it’s a hit. I ended up winning by 12, I couldve edged for four more but no big.

Now I wanna talk about my game with dinelle and preface it a bit.

Dinelle plays wys nightfall but not with undercover, he actually tries to hold the ground. Justni and I agree that this is a pretty bad strategy vs. ds mains and justin handily defeated it the day before. However, in this game, Dinelle skipped the control phase by revealing dash for Get to your ships. Then he wanted to go back and drain but justin wouldn’t let him.

So immediately when we sit down Dinelle brings this up and says he hopes we don’t have a game like that, and I tell him that I’m not justin and stop acting like we’re the same person.

Then he covered his cantina icons, and I asked if it was okay that he not do that. Anyone who plays vs my WYS knows that I offer to cover up the icons if they like, but I personally find it insulting when people cover them up on me. Dinelle was insisting that he cover them up because he thought id “FORGET” and yes he used quotes and said it like i’d be cheating, which is doubly insulting. An argument ensued and finally he relented.

For whatever reason he thought going turn 1 dash to kessel was a smooth move. Outrider’sg ot no maneuever. So i went down and battled with an interceptor and a cannon he said wait i want to sabotage, and I said before the battle? he said yeah. so he did, and i didnt grab it, then dropped another cannon from my hand. he had anotehr sabotage but it’s unique. I blew out dash and saved 3. He sabotaged my second cannon and i grabbed it. Played a tie next turn to get one of my cannon’s back (he out of commissioned the other).

He sabotaged the cannon in play on the next turn and I got that one back as well when I went to go battle his luke on tattooine. Dropped another cannon but meant to play an all power because of the low probability of shooting luke. Good thing as I drew my admiral’s order for destiny and blew him out of the water. I’m holding space pretty strong but he puts mara on the pulsar skate to wakeelmui and I can’t find another cannon to go shoot it down. He’s draining me for 1/1/1 at the db, the farm and wakeelmui while im cancelling his cantina drain with dreaded imperial starfleet and moving in front of his space drain with 2 dreadnaughts 2 interceptors 1 with a cannon. eventually i trap him and get luke alone at kessel and though he knows luke can’t draw destiny he plays out of nowhere to add a destiny, i laugh and he flips two cards over. then i draw mine adn am like ‘you can’t draw destiny there fool’ and he says “too late i flipped them over! just like justin yesterday” at this point i’m boiling. A few minutes before in a battle at tatooine justin came over to watch and dinelle refused to pay attention to our game and demanded justin acknoweldge the fact that he screwed dinelle. Justin was firm and said play your game, I was ready to reach across the table and throw dinelle’s shitty deck in the trash, screaming at him to get back in the game. He is an absolute prick to play cards against. I think he’s an okay guy away from a card table, but on the table he’s a different guy…

see dinelle acts like he’s really particular about everything, he counts your activation every turn, and announces rules like ‘tatooine lets me move for -1 force’ but then goes and does shady shit like underpays for dash when there’s a card in his used pile already. He did this vs. me multiple times and he underpaid for things multiple times against justin and i’m sure other people will chime in with the same kind of stories. but what really got me, adn what just got me absolutely bullshit on my ride tow ork today was the shit about staring up at justin refusing to acknowledge our game and I really wish i just lost my shit on him. It’s not pretty when I lose my temper but I think everyone would’ve seen a side of me they never knew I have. I ended up beating dinelle by less than 10 in what is a pretty tough match, but I’m glad I beat him and I honestly hope i never have to play him again.

I was going to say a lot more about imarahil and karrdeshark whoever they are being pricks on the boards about kyle beating me. Kyle is a classy guy that I’ve liked a while through vs. and I know he said he got pretty hooked up in our matchup by getting tantiv to naboo turn 2 for a drain of 3 off the bat as well as us all taking colo shield out of our decks that day. but yup, i got beat, i still walked away with more money than him or anyone else at this event save the guys on my team, i knew only me or steve could come out of the bracket and we all help each other out. if people wanna talk shit and continue to discount me as just that other guy on the KTOD can slurp it up come out say shit to my face, and I’ll buy you a drink with all the prize money I get from playing the card game I’m better than you at.
